Whether it was from your regularly watched news program or social media, everyone has heard about the Woman's March that took place on the Saturday after the President's Inauguration. When initially writing this piece, I allowed myself to be sucked into the negativity and politics of that march but I am here to play you a new song.
Let's relive a bit of history. Jackie Robinson, a man of both talent and heart should be an inspiration to us all. He played the game of Baseball in a time where nobody thought he should be allowed to because of the color of his skin. He received hundreds, if not thousands, of death threats to him and his family. His own teammates created a petition against playing on the same field as him. But what did Jackie do? He went out onto that field and he played ball. He stood up for himself by marching on; without physically or even verbally fighting back. He fought for himself using the kindness in his heart and the talent in his veins.
Women are not treated equally, I understand this, but have you ever received death threats because you have two 'X' chromosomes? Have you been denied a hotel room because of your gender? Have you been surrounded by hundreds of people booing and yelling profanities at you? I highly doubt the answer could be yes to any of these (if I am incorrect please let me know).
Where am I going with these absurd comparisons? It's pretty simple. Let's do as Jackie and march on. Let's put down the signs and go back to work and have an adult conversation about our pay not being equal. Let's quit that job if they won't comply. Let's stop the false accusations of rape and start being responsible when at parties. Let's speak up when involved in a real rape case. Let's dress for ourselves and start being more respectful of our bodies. Let's teach men who were raised improperly to respect us. Let's hold the door open for men and women and dogs and giraffes and any other being who walk through doors. Let's teach our children that screaming about having different parts isn't a way to prove our point. Let's be kinder to one another. Let's stop wasteing time on folks who only take from us. Let's smile more. Let's reflect more on what we have and be thankful to be in a country where we can think for ourselves. Let's stop putting others down to prove our point. Let's lift each other up. Let's stop claiming that we are spreading love and hope when what all these protests are doing is creating more negativity. Let's give more compliments to each other. Let's hope that this president does great things for our beautiful country. Let's walk in Jackie's shadow and go out there and play the same ball game everyone else is. I don't know about you, but I am just here to live, to be real and kind. I am not here to sit around and hope that my cardboard signs full of memes and profanity change anything. I am here to stand up for myself when need be and do so in a way that would make my mom, my daughter and Jackie proud.
