As if we were not already aware of our social media screening habits, Instagram has now released an update that is designed to let you know when you have been using the app in excess. Day in and day out, we have become accustomed to logging into our various social media platforms, and often times we sign off feeling significantly worse.
Whether you are seeing a number of girls with seemingly perfect lives and bodies on the beach while you are sitting in bed on your fifth Hulu binge episode or watching your friends travel the world while you spend every day working, it affects everyone.
We can sugar coat it with a little bit of humor every now and then, and underestimate the effects this generation is having on us.
However, when it comes down to it, this update has great intentions. Instagram will now provide you with a user dashboard that lets you know exactly how much time you have been spending on the app per week or day by day. You are also provided with a daily reminder if you so desire.
You are now able to set limits for yourself, and once you have reached your maximum self-set time allotted, Instagram will send you an alert. Genius, right? If only we could actually disable our accounts. Unfortunately, you can bypass the daily limit as much as you wish; you are only cheating yourself in that situation.
I, personally, plan to set a limit for myself considering most of the time I log onto my various accounts on a good day, and I end up logging off feeling exhausted by my efforts to keep up with everything and everyone around me. Nowadays, with just a few clicks you are able to tell who is talking to who, what your ex has been up to (whether you want to know or not), and what everyone you know (and even some that you don't) are doing with their lives. It is a damaging competition amongst users to see who is "living their best life." Cheesy, but it is the truth.
I liked Instagram better in sixth grade when we were all putting up selfies on the way to school in the backseat of our moms' cars. But hey, time doesn't slow down and clearly neither do we.
There are other additional features, such as a feature that enables a mute on push notifications. You are able to turn them off on a set schedule picked by you. Overall, the idea behind this app is to decrease the amount of time spent refreshing on these apps when we could be out doing something productive.
Whether you decide to take advantage of this update or not, it is refreshing to know that others are becoming aware of what social media is doing to us all. I can only imagine the good it would do to use these new features; maybe get outside and enjoy some beauty outside of a countless array of Instagram filters.
