I can't be the only one that not only binges on food during the holidays, but also Christmas movies. Yes, it has started. Honestly, that's probably why most of my homework hasn't been done — but don't even play like that hasn't been you too. So, I've take some risks and watched some small production Christmas movies on Netflix, and I've found some real gems among the rubble. So, give these newbies a try in-between the classics.
1. "Dear Santa"
"Dear Santa" is the typical movie about remembering the "true spirit of Christmas." But what was surprising is that I was somehow kind of hooked on it, even though my initial impression was something like "Well this is gonna be crap..." It follows this spoiled, Paris Hilton-esque woman named Crystal who is told to either find a job, or find a man to support her, because he parents are going to cut her off. Well, Crystal isn't the working type (oh shocker right?) and she sets her sights to finding a man. Stumbling along the sidewalk, she finds a super adorable letter written by a little girl hoping that Santa will bring her a new lady to keep her dad company. Well, it was actually a refreshing movie, kinda cutesy too. Definitely something to watch once, maybe more depending on whether or not you agree with Crystal's fashion choice or not.
2. "I'll Be Home for Christmas"
I've known this movie since I was a kid, especially because it was Disney. But, since it's less known I figure I'd mention it. It has the little cutie Jonathan Taylor Thomas (you'll recognize him once you see him) and he's this hot shot college prankster (since you're in college you'll most likely think of five real guys like him that you know) who is promised a Porsche if he makes it home in time for Christmas dinner. Audiences find out quickly that this kid has been avoiding going home because of a stepmother that he hasn't gotten to know really. The movie follows his antics, Huck Finn style, and you can't help but get kind of caught up in the hilarity of it.
3. "Christmas Crush"
Not totally a Christmas movie, but definitely speaks to the souls of all us awkward kids out there. Georgia, who currently lives at home with her parents and is only a mere assistant to a big fashion designer, is caught up in nostalgia as her high school reunion comes. Ashamed of her current situation, Georgia lies about her job and love life in order to keep up with her more successful "friends." She also is totally hoping to get back with her hot shot, jock of a high school boyfriend (No! Don't go for the ex!). But, she also meets up with her best guy friend from high school too, and he encourages her to just be herself. Audiences follow Georgia through the night, and through her high school career, and kind of relives their own high school days. Romance, nostalgia, and petty girl drama... all three things that are on my Christmas list, that's for sure!
4. "Christmas Bounty"
Tired of the same ol' same ol' boring Christmas movies, where there only action they have is the girl who falls while ice skating? Or, planning to watch this with your boyfriend? Then, "Christmas Bounty" is the perfect movie! Starring the ever beautiful Francia Raisa (the Latina girl from "Secret Life of the American Teen"), audiences get to see her kick some major butt... in majorly adorable outfits. Caught between her two lives (a grade school teacher vs. bounty hunter) and two men (mister old flame and mister sophisticated), this movie keeps you guessing until the very last minute. Plus her physique will definitely inspire you to keep up your gym motivation during the holidays.
5. "A Christmas Kiss"
This one is by far my favorite new find for the holidays. A cute, quiet designer's assistant has this incredible, random kiss in an elevator with Mr. Tall Dark and Cultured, only to find he is her boss' man. Whoops. Definitely one to watch with the girls, break out the wine and fall in love with Christmas traditions and mistletoe romance!
