A New Book in the Works

Because, sometimes, bad news is inspiring.

A New Book in the Works
Best Friend Books, LLC

It's been nearly a week since the election. The news was devastating to me, and the fall-out continues. Two days of disbelief and sadness did nothing for my productiveness, until it became clear that the work that my partner, Lisa Combs and I have been pursuing for a year is more important than ever. What happened next — and is still happening — is an intense drive and passion to create more.

I have previously posted about our publishing company, Best Friend Books, LLC, and our mission to write books that encourage and empower children (and adults). It seems that overnight, our endeavor has grown from dream job to true calling.

Our new book has become an important priority as we navigate a transition in this country that's confusing and frustrating to many. I can imagine children keenly feeling this uncertainty.

Late last week, Lisa was inspired by a teacher's effort to comfort her students, and the book, "You Can Sit With Me," was born. We both feel an overwhelming urgency to get this into kids' hands as soon as possible. Here's what Lisa has written about our new book:

"It is a rare individual who has never felt left out, left behind, or just not sure where they fit in. COMING SOON.....The next book from Best Friend Books, entitled "You Can Sit With Me" will not only be a fun children's storybook, but will provide an illustrated anthem for unity, inclusion, and loving kindness at a time when we all need to remember the universal need to belong."

This last Friday morning, the cover artwork jumped into my head. My rough sketches and notes were completed this morning. Tomorrow, I start final illustrations.

Please follow our progress on this current project by "liking" Best Friend Books on Facebook, or visit our website.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
