It's no secret that Barbie has been a little problematic in the past, with "Slumber Party Barbie" from 1965 being the first to come to mind. This Barbie's accessories came with a book titled "How To Lose Weight" with only one instruction; Don't eat!
However, Barbie seems to be reconsidering their past behavior and combatting some real issues in society. This week, they announced a new line of dolls with a revolutionary new spin on the classic; three new body types, seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles.
In the past, Barbie has typically appealed to white females (as the first black Barbie didn't come out until 1979 and typically cost anywhere from 20%-50% more than white Barbie). However, she was (for the most part) a positive role model for the people she appealed to. She has had over 150 careers - including being an astronaut three times - 1965, 1985 and 1994 - and though she was often times sold "with" Ken, she was the center of attention.
Much of this change with Barbie seems to have come about from research done back in 2013 by Rehabs.com about the "real life" proportions of the doll. In addition to adding three new body shapes - curvy, tall, and petite - they have also created 7 new skin tones to choose from, giving more representation to the POC community under the brand. Dolls can also have 24 different hair styles and 22 different eye colors, depending on your preference, giving upwards of 14,000 possibilities to create a Barbie that fits you.
This representation of more types of women really gives me hope into Barbie's future, especially when choosing toys for my sons and daughters. Not only are they just nice toys, but they will be great for teaching love and acceptance to all types of people. My child will be able to see themselves in a doll and feel validated, not be forced to compete with unrealistic expectations.
Bravo to you, Barbie, and I look forward to how you will expand in the future to support other issues in the world.
