I will NEVER work in retail with my degree.
Now, look, before I get started on what will probably end up being a little bit of a rant, I want to post a disclaimer: I do, at this moment in time, work in retail, but I'm a college student. Quite frankly, this is a pretty easy gig that I'm not planning on necessarily giving up for a while. I genuinely do love my job and wouldn't change it for the world, but in my future, I do not want a career focused on retail.
With all that out of the way, let's get into it:
1. Retial cares more about profits than they do their employees.
You might be asking yourself "Ann, who hurt you?" but let me stop you there, and explain my point a little bit.
While I might have a biased point (that I do not want to get into in this article), I understand that business is all about money. It's about your stock shares, selling your product, and excelling in whatever area that you work in. I'm a business major, and this is fine, but there's a reason that I'm not in finance.
When things like stocks drop, or it comes down to having to fire an employee when your company starts making cuts, then I have a problem. Sure, in a perfect world no one would get laid off or terminated, but I don't think it's fair that sales are what narrows down the value of employees in a company. If an employee is not making enough sales, that's his problem. Fire him! Who cares if he has a baby on the way or has student loan debt; peace out, man.
2. Consumerism is a driving force in this field.
Every store you see is focused on one thing: selling to customers. While this is a good thing for those that do work in retail, consumerism is not a good thing. It's a problem in the United States that is rapidly growing, and is not helping our resources or are wallets. Stores push to sell people more and more of things that they do not need, and this is not a field I want to be involved in. Ever.
I don't want to contribute to something that ultimately hurts the United States, and quite frankly, the world. It's not something that I've ever been passionate about, and honestly just is not something that interests me. Now, the effects of retail and consumerism do; but working in it? Hell no.
3. More retail = More competition
With Amazon being the driving force of the future of consumerism, I'm not necessarily interested in watching stores compete against it. I, quite frankly, see stores as a diminishing market. Everyone purchases online for the convenience and accessibility anymore, so why would I get myself involved in something that's going to end up being ripped away in a few years?
Now, I guess I could work for Amazon or another online retailer, but reference my two previous points on why that will never happen.
4. At the end of the day, rude customers suck.
I've watched the way that people come into the store I work at and treat my supervisors. It's horrible. Sorry your sweatshirt didn't fit after you bought it and took it home with you instead of just trying it on in the store and saving yourself the hassle, but that does not mean you have any right to be rude. We're not perfect people either, and you have no right to treat people terribly just because you were not happy with something you wanted to buy. Besides that, treat people with respect. It's super easy to do. I know this isn't a perfect world, but I want to work somewhere where people won't be mad about the smallest things all of the time.
Maybe it's wishful thinking, and maybe this article won't even be relevant in my future and I will end up in retail, but I hope that someone out there can relate to this at least a little bit and see where I'm coming from.
