Why You Should Never Stop Smiling

It is time to turn that frown upside-down.

Why You Should Never Stop Smiling

Over the years, you might begin to realize that it is the simple things that make life worth living. It is the small gestures that make the biggest difference or the simple silences that tend to go a long way. What may just be the most simple task, a true act of kindness, is smiling. Whether it is a close-lipped smirk or a toothy grin, a smile can make a big impact.

A smile is a universal way to say hello. It does not matter how old you are, what language you speak, or what country you are from, everyone understands a smile. Not only can a smile change your mood, but it is also healthy for the body. In fact, smiling releases endorphins that can reduce stress and make you happy. So, how cool is it that there is science behind smiling?

Anyway, smiling gives us a reason to take a moment to forget about our worries and just focus on the now. A dead phone battery and a failing grade on an exam seem like such terrible events that can cause the end of the world, but it is the actions that can turn our frowns upside-down. No matter how small your facial muscles move your mouth into the form of a smile, you cannot help but feel slightly happier than you were feeling before.

It is looking through pictures on your phone and struggling to contain laughter while reminiscing on a comical memory or taking a walk outside that can pull the straight line our lips make into a concave-up curve. Eating your favorite food or spending time with your friends and family are just a few of the many simple actions that can draw a smile on your face. It is your hard work paying off or the words from a compliment you receive that not only make you smile, but will also make you happy.

Besides finding ways to make yourself smile, why not find ways to make someone else smile? Why not reflect your own happiness onto someone else? It can be as simple as holding the door for someone or helping someone carry a heavy object from one place to another. Making someone else smile may seem cheesy, but it could potentially mean the absolute world to that person, and you may not even know it.

So, yes, it is safe to say that smiling can create happiness. Why not spread the happiness to others by smiling? Just like strep throat and the flu, smiles are contagious too. Whether you like it or not, a smile will always be with you, and it will not escape from you. Life is short, and I am sure you would want to spend your life smiling, instead of having a stern expression resting on your face, right?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
