It Is OK To Never Procrastinate

I am in college. A lot of times I hear college students talking about how they waited until the last minute to write a paper, study, or take an online quiz. According to some, it is what college students do. However, I am a college student; I do not procrastinate, and I never will.

I believe in being on time. I believe in working on things and getting them done in a timely manner. After all, I doubt your employer will appreciate getting your project three weeks late. Sure, sometimes I have to put certain things on the back-burner to make sure the most important things get done first, but for the most part, I try to complete an assignment as soon as I get it. If it is a lengthy assignment, I try to at least work on it each day until a few days before it is due. By managing my time I can finalize everything and make sure it is exactly the way I want it. I do not like being under pressure, and I definitely don't do my best work under pressure. They say that "diamonds are made under pressure," but I want my work to be a little better than that. While it may work for diamonds, it doesn't work for Destin. I cannot work when I am stressed to get something done.

You never know what might come up the day before an assignment is due. You could be sick. You could have an emergency. You could wake up too late to finish the assignment. That is why I believe in trying to get things done early. I figure if there is an emergency or I sleep late, all of my work is done, so I can handle the problem at hand.

I try to take care of things as they come at me. I wish I could control everything and not have to worry about the next assignment. I wish I could just automatically get things done, but that isn't life. However, because I do complete everything in a timely manner, I can always focus on what is next and not have to worry about what I have already done.

Maybe this method of getting things done immediately doesn't work for everyone. I am so high-strung that sometimes I feel like I don't have a choice. Most times, people procrastinate to avoid doing an assignment, but usually, the assignment isn't as bad as they think it is going to be unless it is getting blood work done or some scary medical procedure of course. However, most of the time it is not that serious.

All good assignments take time. If you want good results, it is better to take your time and not rush. You're going to have to do it whether you like it or not; It is better to get going so you can move on to fun times like sleeping, posting on social media, and watching Netflix. One of my favorite phrases is "work hard, then play harder," and I believe this applies to everything in life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
