Why I Will Never Participate in the 21 Day Fix

Disclaimer: To anyone that has used or sells this product, I am not knocking your lifestyle. I am simply saying it is not for me.

Hey, guess what? I am overweight. I know, you are freaking SHOCKED that I am not 5'8" and 150 pounds. But for real. Because I have a little extra fluff, I get approached weekly by various Beach Body coaches to join their 21 day challenge and change my life for the better. There are a few issues that I have with this concept.

1. I don't recall asking for your help.

I am well aware that I am overweight. I have known since I was in the fifth grade and my dad called me fat for the first time (he's such a peach). I have been told by my doctor, as well as the simple act of looking in the mirror everyday, along with having to angle my selfie appropriately to make sure I don't have 55 chins. Trust me, I know that I should probably lose weight. What I don't understand is why people target me specifically to do that. I haven't put out a cry on any form of social media asking for help and I find it insulting that you feel the need to seek me out and ask multiple times. The answer is no.

2. That crap is hella expensive

I live paycheck to paycheck and I can't afford the startup cost for that. I can buy my own fruits and vegetables and make my own healthy meals. I don't need to put them in some weird containers and only eat that. I don't want to drink a shake to replace a meal and I don't really care how many nutrients are in it.

3. I don't want to help you make money

I understand that this program is helping tons of people lose weight and feel better about themselves, but guess what else? It also makes the coaches a crap ton of money. Good for you, but you are drawing on people's insecurities to cushion your own pocket.

4. 21 days won't undo a lifetime of poor eating habits

I understand that the concept is that it takes 21 days to form a habit, so you do the program for 21 days. However, I was raised making poor eating choices, using food as a crutch, and eating whenever and whatever I wanted to. 21 days is not going to undo 25 years of that. There is no possible way. I would have to do the program like 10 times in order to actually make it stick in my brain.

5. I can, in fact, do this on my own

I am fully capable of eating healthy, working out, and taking care of myself. I don't need a coach, a shake, or a regimented program in order to do it. All I need is cheap produce from Aldi, some lean protein, and an amazing support system. All of which I currently have.

So, I beg you, before you approach me again about joining your next challenge, just don't. I am not, nor will I ever be, interested in this latest fad.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
