Every time I'm eating ice cream or drinking a slushie with people, someone gets a brain freeze. They're usually holding their head with a painful look on their face. That's when I say, "I've never had a brain freeze!" and that's when I get a very envious look given to me.
I don't get brain freeze and I want to know why. Nobody believes me when I say I don't get them! I have tried so many times to get a brain freeze. I've drunk slushies in under a minute and eaten all my ice cream as my friends watch hoping I get that famous ice cream headache. But still, I haven't succeeded in getting a brain freeze.
So why have I never experienced a brain freeze? Unfortunately, brain freeze has barely been studied. Nobody quite knows what goes on when people have a brain freeze and why it doesn't happen to some people. According to one theory, it is caused when the nerves in your mouth feel something cold which send a message to the brain and causes arteries and blood vessels to react. So maybe some people have more sensitive nerves than others.
Another theory is that the headache acts as a defense mechanism that your brain gives off to alert you that it's really really cold and you need to keep warm. Maybe some brains lack that defense mechanism. Nobody knows for sure though. What researchers do know is that people who are prone to headaches will be prone to brain freeze as well. Also, if your parents get brain freeze, you most likely will too.
None of these apply to me. I have experienced headaches many times and both my parents get brain freeze. Does this mean I'm an alien? No, only about 30% of people suffer from brain freeze! My next question is, do dogs get brain freeze?
