*THERE WILL BE SOME LIGHT SPOILERS. NOTHING MAJOR*
Let me set the record straight. Netflix's new show was good at times, and I watched all of it just so I could write this article on Halloween.
If you haven't heard, Netflix created a reboot (ish) of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a show I grew up watching reruns of every morning before elementary school. I watched the new show hoping to see a bit more of the original show reflected. What I got were some of the same characters, but none of the charm.
Sabrina and Harvey are a couple, but they make things complicated by making his family a huge deal. She has a couple quirky friends, but they're involved in almost none of the main story-lines until the end of the show, kind of both doing their own things that occasionally involve Sabrina.
Sabrina and her aunts are involved in something a lot darker than a broom-closet other realm with Penn and Teller on the council of witches. I knew it was going to be a bit spookier, but this was teenage angst and satanism rolled into something weird.
Every character had some kind of tie-in with something dark and creepy, and I didn't really enjoy that. And then there was the useless romances in places there didn't need to be and some evil side characters I needed MORE OF that didn't get much attention at all.
There are some discrepancies about the show I didn't care for. For instance, Sabrina, we learn in the first episode/trailer, is about to turn 16 and be brought into their coven, the Church of Night. But the academy of witches has a lot more talent in it than 16 year olds should be able to accomplish off of maybe a year or two of work. And then immediately Sabrina can match them? I think not.
Of course, there was a token gay character (in this case, 2) and they made the show 10x better. We never get a whole lot of detail into them, but I'm hoping if there is a second season we'll get to see bit more of him.
I didn't hate all of the show, but it was a lot like what I imagine Riverdale is like without watching it (which makes sense since it was directed by the same creators as the Archie-comic-turned-CW show.
I expected a bit more of a Netflix show just because they have been notorious for putting out big hits this year. The ending (and I won't spoil it much) made pretty much no sense to me, but I was kind of okay with that so long as they fix it in the next season.
All in all, I'll watch the rest of the show in hopes of getting a bit more out of it, maybe straightening out some plot points. I assume there is going to be another season, probably coming out hella far off in the future. But in the meantime, I'll be watching the original.
