Lifetime's flop, titled 'You,' is now on Netflix. I know what you may be thinking, if a show can't do well on a popular television network, why should you watch it? Here's why: 'You' keeps youguessing. This show is shocking and fast-paced, always keeping viewers on their toes.
[SPOILER ALERT] The show follows Joe Goldberg, a bookstore clerk and reading fanatic, as he falls in love with Guinevere Beck, a graduate student and aspiring writer. The show derives its story from Joe's delusion that he isn't stalking Beck while he hacks her phone, follows her around, and stands outside her window at night. All while he is internally dealing with his past relationship with Candace, which is left ambiguous to the viewer. He is a Grade A stalker--someone call the cops. As the story progresses and Joe becomes crazier about Beck, they genuinely fall in love. Beck, however, is oblivious to the fact that she is sleeping with the enemy. Joe kills her best friend, Peach, her ex-boyfriend, Benji, and eventually Beck when she figures out his entire scheme.
This show has some serious 'Pretty Little Liars' and 'Gossip Girl' vibes. That might be due to the fact that Shay Mitchell and Penn Badgley, from each of those shows respectively, star in 'You.' From the New York City setting of GG to the iPhone mischief of PLL, this is diverse in the interest groups it reaches. The show hits issues like domestic abuse, drug abuse and addiction, and cyberbullying. All of them are tackled and (for the most part) resolved throughout the storyline, creating an intensely interesting television show.
'You' was a flop on television, but after airing on Netflix and being renewed for a second season, the future seems promising for this counter-culture thriller.
