Winter break is either the time to hustle or the time to relax. It's short, sweet, and refreshing, but no matter how much we may enjoy it, there are bound to be some times where we simply have nothing to do. And where do we, as college students, turn to in times of boredom? Netflix. So, here's a list of 5 shows on Netflix you should watch to kill time during winter break!
1. Big Mouth
If you're into shows like Family Guy and American Dad, Big Mouth is a show you should look into. It's raunchy, awkward, and sometimes downright uncomfortable, but it's also one of the most relatable shows out there for anyone who looks back on their tween years in horror. Oh, and it has a song in every episode, so there's that too.
2. Black Mirror
If you're like me and find keeping track of long, intricate plotlines too much of a hassle, then Black Mirror is the perfect show for you. Each episode has a different plot, cast, and a sinister twist ending. All of the stories center around new-age technology, and how having this new tech will affect our humanity and way of life. The twists and turns are almost always unforeseen and pessimistic, but the sheer creativity of it all will keep you coming back for more.
3. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
With a colorful cast and a truckload of pop-culture references, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt manages to find the perfect combination of spontaneous and tongue-in-cheek humor. It has three seasons, and the story begins with the main character Kimmy being freed from an underground bunker after being abducted by a manipulative reverend. Though the show is bright and absurd at times, it still manages to find the time to handle bigger issues like childhood trauma, divorce, and gentrification.
4. Chewing Gum
This is another show that can be dirty and uncomfortable, but it's jokes are well-timed and unexpected. The story focuses around Tracey, a 24-year-old virgin with no real education having to learn to navigate the worlds of sex and romance in the modern age with the help of her slightly better-adjusted friends. The characters are all eccentric and just a bit out there, but the plot twists are always just as quirky and sudden. This show gets bonus points for the British accents, too.
5. Queer As Folk
Though it's older and kind of outdated, Queer As Folk provides an interesting look back into what being gay was like back in the 80s and 90s, and discusses important historical events like the AIDS crisis and widespread gay bashings. Set in Pittsburgh, it gives a glimpse into the lives of a group of friends who deal with things like STIs, infidelity, substance abuse, domestic abuse, rejection from family, and body image issues. If you like drama and want a more theatrical look back in time, then Queer As Folk is definitely something to look into. Be warned, though; there's a sex scene every nearly every 5 minutes.
