There is a time and place for a raw and brutal TV show, one that brings you to the edge of your seat, literally. A show that makes you gasp and cry with anguish yet you cannot look away, no matter how much you may want to. That time is right now, my friends.
A new show appeared in my nightly Netflix browsing, something different and new, yet which contained actors I already adore.
Jason Momoa stars in a new Netflix Original Tv Show called Frontier.
The Netflix synopsis: “In 18th century North America, ruthless trappers and entrepreneurs fight to wrest control of the fur trade from the mighty Hudson’s Bay Company.”
Don't let the 15 Age rating fool you, this show is no child's play. Some scenes are not for those with a weak constitution. However, in a world where there is so much censorship, this show pushes boundaries further than anything I've seen. The closest match I can bring to mind is The Revenant. Jason Momoa not only surpasses his performance in Game Of Thrones as everyone's favourite Khal; he goes deep into the psyche of a man distraught with pain and sorrow on a killing spree to take down the Hudson Bay Company and the man that wronged him.
If you are worried about it being another one of those Netflix shows that has an amazing first season and then you never get that conclusion of a second season, do not fear. Frontier (not surprisingly) was already renewed for a second season BEFORE the first episode has even aired on Netflix. This is the period drama that we've been waiting for. The only other show that even comes close to Frontier in a similar genre at the moment is Tom Hardy in Taboo (another great show that you are missing out on if you're not watching it already). Never before have the settings and pace of these shows been so tested. At this point, I'd say that there are far more amazing TV shows out that have left an impression on me than there are films. A show can fit far more into 13 episodes than in the average two-hour movie. Your villains get more exposition and as such have depth and strike fear into the hearts of viewers. Frontier's villains are many, coming from every angle as each person forges their own path in the raw environment of the Canadian mountains. There is constant risk from all around. We can genuinely fear for our favourite characters' wellbeing, episode to episode.
TV is changing; no longer do you have to wait for a show to air week to week. We are all guilty of binge-watching (some more than others). In the case of Frontier, my friends and I were left breathless at the end of each and every episode (and don't even get me started on the season finale). Very few shows leave my heart beating hard and fast and my throat dry and yet with a smile on my face. Frontier is one of those shows, so go watch it. What have you got to lose?
