The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) is currently composed of nine International Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
During the 1930's, African Americans knowingly experienced trials and tribulations in the United States considering the restricting times brought on by hate groups and government officials. Coming out of the black struggle and forming bonds between African American people became a mission that resulted in the first of the divine nine organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority inc.
Following the establishment of these organizations, the founders looked for individuals to help better promote and build up their fraternity or sorority.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council is known for its overarching theme of finding value in working to the best of your ability, in addition to their grueling pledge process. Director, Gerard McMurray explores the intensifying violence of underground hazing in the Netflix film, Burning Sands.
Critics have condemned the film, due to its harshness and embellished perspective. Some say, this type of pledging process may have been used twenty years ago, but is now long gone.
Since the announcement of the film, some black greeks have shown support and others have shared words of opposition. Active members of a black sorority or fraternity may say that being a part of a black organization means being a contributing member of society. The seriousness of being in one of these particular organizations stems from it being a life choice. Due to the loyalty that comes with entering the NPHC means that dropping or deciding to quit is not common.
The film is due to be released on March 10th, 2017.
