As cable is becoming obsolete and the culture of Netflix binging is taking over, the average Netflix user has watched pretty much everything in the popular category of the site. All of my friends and I have seen "Breaking Bad," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Friday Night Lights," and countless others. Over the past few years, I’ve kept a list on my phone of all the series I’ve finished on Netflix. My current count is 17 shows... don’t judge. I’ve come to a point where I’ve seen everything that’s ever been recommended to me. Recently, I’ve made it my mission to explore the depths of Netflix and discover some indie films and less-talked-about television series that were seriously entertaining and deserve recognition. If you’re looking for something to do this summer or, like me, are just a Netflix addict; here are some hidden gems you should check out:
1. "iZombie"
For a CW show, I was very impressed. This isn’t your typical zombie plot where a virus takes over and all hell breaks loose. In this contemporary spin, the main character, Liv, attends a boat party where everyone on board gets bit by zombies. However, she blends right back into society as a seemingly normal person that’s just a little extra pale. In order to stay alive, she has to feed on human brains, so she gets a job at her local morgue for easy access. The most interesting part of this show is that she experiences the characteristics of the person whose brain she’s just eaten and can also see their memories. Liv decides to use this side effect as a way to help solve peoples’ murders. I won’t say any more, but seriously, this show is addicting. There’s only one season on Netflix so far, which I managed to finish in two or three days. I’m anxiously awaiting the next season!
2. "Bates Motel"
If you’ve ever seen "Psycho," this show should peak your interest. It follows the life of Norman Bates as a teenager and shows his progression into a murderer. The acting is amazing and the cliffhangers always had me sticking around for another episode. I would describe this series as mysterious and suspenseful. There are already three seasons on Netflix and the fourth isn’t far behind.
3. "Love"
This one is actually a Netflix original series that was released relatively recently. Don’t be fooled by the title, it’s not a mushy love story. There’s definitely some romance along the way, but I'd classify it as a comedy. This show was entertaining to watch because it’s insanely realistic and relatable. Mickey, the main character, is a gal in her 30s who still drinks and smokes on the daily, lives with a roommate, and tends to pick men that are a complete waste of time. When she befriends a nerdy guy, Gus, she realizes the qualities that are most important for people to have. There’s still only one season out, but I’d hop on the bandwagon now if you’re looking for a light, feel-good show!
4. "Begin Again"
Transitioning into movies, this one has an all-star cast and intriguing plot. It takes place in New York, where the girlfriend (Keira Knightley) of a famous singer (Adam Levine) attempts to start her own singing career as opposed to sitting on the sidelines as per usual. With the help of a struggling music producer (Mark Ruffalo), she may just create an album. Honestly, my favorite part of the movie is the soundtrack. After watching, I went on Spotify, saved the whole thing, and have listened to it repeatedly. All in all, I would classify this movie as a very solid chick flick.
5. "6 Years"
As opposed to a movie about falling in love, this is a movie about what happens when you’ve been in love since high school. I thought the camera work was great and the acting was effortless. If this is any teller, I’ve probably watched it three times already. The leading girl is Taissa Farmiga from American Horror Story and the leading guy is Ben Rosenfield.. who hasn’t starred in much else but he sure is cute.
6. "Tiger House"
I was anxious this whole entire movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. Basically, a girl gets trapped in a house while it gets invaded. She has to keep quiet and avoid getting killed. If you’re into suspenseful movies, you’ll love this one. Also, the actress is Kaya Scodelario from "Skins," so if you binged that show like I did it's cool to see her in a different role.
7. "The Road Within"
In this quirky film, some very unlikely friendships are formed at a mental clinic. The main characters are dealing with anorexia, tourette’s, and obsessive compulsive disorder. When they decide to escape the facility for a little adventure, everything gets interesting to say the least. If you’re looking for a movie that’s not your typical coming of age story, check this out.
8. "About Alex"
When Alex attempts suicide, his old friend group comes together to keep an eye on him. I know, this sounds off-putting, but it’s actually a really enjoyable film. This reunion has romance, hookups, heartbreak, humor, and all the feels!
9. "Love and Honor"
Let me start by saying that Liam Hemsworth is the most attractive man on the planet to me. I love him. So, with a slightly biased view, this movie was incredible. It takes place in the 70's during the Vietnam War. When two soldiers come back to America, they experience the hippie culture of revolution and struggle with leaving their new friends behind. This movie was a drama and romance at the same time. I loved everything about it -- five stars.
I hope these recommendations open your eyes to some shows and movies that you’ve never seen before on Netflix. With ample free time over the summer, there’s no reason not to binge on some hidden gems!
