NEPA Fun for Marywood Family Weekend

Now, we are almost 5 weeks into school and classes are already bogging us down, but some of us get to look forward to this upcoming weekend. Our friends and family are coming up for Marywood's Family Weekend!! This is my 4th time with this fun weekend, and every time, I always enjoy my time with my family. As the years have gone by, there are new places to go to, whether to eat or to shop! This is a short list of the many fun places to go to with your family in the NEPA area!!

1. Manning's Ice Cream Farm

There are a few locations for Manning's Ice Cream, one of them being right in Dunmore by the Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts. The original one, where they process their ice cream, is off of exit 199 of Route 81 North. Both locations are amazing; the ice cream is perfect after a warm day and the prices are fairly reasonable.

2. Dickson City Shopping Center

About 8 to 15 minutes away, depending on the route you go, there is a huge shopping complex with a mall, and many smaller strip malls as well as chain stores and plenty of restaurants to eat at. From Walmart to Macy's, from Texas Roadhouse to Taco Bell, there is no shortage of places to shop at or places to eat.

3. Miller's Orchard Farm Market

There is a cute farm about 20 minutes away from Marywood called Miller's Farm. It has apples, pumpkins, delicious apple cider and even donuts! It is not a big farm, and unfortunately doesn't have apple picking, but the apples they have are always fresh and their donuts are made on the premises. They even have other fresh meats and honey with some organic products as well.

4. The Loading Dock Bar & Grill

There is a great place right in Dunmore called the Loading Dock Bar & Grill, which is a small restaurant with amazing food, a good atmosphere and the prices are super reasonable. It is not open on Sundays, but for Saturday, it would be a great place to go for lunch.

5. Nay Aug Park

A good local nature spot is Nay Aug Park. There are good hiking trails, a playground for children and even cool tree houses to walk along the trail and see the forest from above! There is a great look out spot to see an unused train track, even just sitting there enjoying the woods in quiet.

These are just a few of the many great places the Scranton/Dunmore area has to offer!! Also, you can go to the actual city of Scranton and take your family and friends to the many great places that was on your Downtown Tours while here on Fall Welcoming. So take your family out and explore the great NEPA area!!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
