A Much Needed Recovery Weekend

The only reason I made it to my eight o'clock class on Monday.

Last week was tough. I had 2 exams, a quiz, and an art critique (the art equivalent of an exam) all within five days. On top of that, I had my usual softball, work, and sorority schedule. Needless to say I kind of felt like dying at the end of the week. I was so stressed with life and school that I really just needed to sit and cry for a while. So to cleanse myself of a terrible week, my friends and I planned the best recovery weekend full of laughing and crying and eating.

1. We watched a sad movie

When you need to cry, what better way to make it happen than watch a romcom with your best friends? Me Before You definitely took my mind off of school, and put me and a much better mood.

2. We listened to sad songs

As if the movie wasn’t enough, we listened to sad love songs to really get the tears flowing. I didn’t cry until I completely lost it during Labyrinth’s Jealous, at which point I sobbed like a small child.

3. We wandered

Because it was Friday night, we were able to walk to the south side of campus and meet up with a friend and gossip about all the people we had seen. Then sitting under the gazebo allows for a lot of people watching.

4. We ate a lot

Nothing says college quite like four girls lying on the floor of a sorority lodge at three in the morning while eating sugar cookies and popcorn.

5. We got dressed up

Saturday was Shauna’s 18th birthday so we relaxed all morning then got cleaned up and put on our cutest dresses and best heels and gave each other makeovers before we went out for the night.

6. We went to a good restaurant

Everyone knows breakfast for dinner is a great idea so we went to IHOP for strawberry crepes and felt like royalty in our little booth.

7. We watched a scary movie

For some reason, the rest of the world things being terrified counts as fun so we went to see Don’t Breathe. I’m pretty sure I only saw about half of the movie because the rest of the time, my face was buried in my knees. The one time I actually saw a suspenseful moment, I screamed for a solid two seconds and terrified everyone around me more than the actual movie.

8. We celebrated

As is customary, after we got back to campus we gave Shauna her birthday gifts and celebrated the last half hour before her birthday was officially over. We pretended not to notice when midnight came and passed, and we stayed up until close to three, just hanging out and listening to music.

9. We had a sleepover

Because it was so late when everyone decided to go to bed, Shauna and I had a little sleepover in my room. I’m trying to convince myself that she stayed because my room was so much closer, not that I was still terrified because of the movie.

10. We sat and talked and reflected on our great friendship

Sunday morning came too soon but to wrap up a pretty great weekend, we always meet in the caf and talk about life while sipping chocolate milk and nibbling on biscuits. I feel so much more relaxed that I think I might make it through another week of life at Millsaps.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
