I Need You

The best friends to have in your life.

I Need You
Victoria Leigh Keiser

Fact: we cannot get through life alone. No one is meant to walk this Earth having no one else to turn to. We are born by those who love us and grow up doing the same. As each day passes, we need to have someone to turn to, someone to hold, and someone to support us while weathering the storm. As much as it is hard to admit (especially for those independent folks), we need others to get by. For most, it is their family. For others, it is their significant others. While I have my family and loved ones, I also know I have my friends. However, these aren't just the friends you pass in the hall or occasionally message over social media. These are the truest, most wonderful people you could ever have. These are the best friends you will need to get by in life.

The “Emma”

This friend will be there for years upon years. Starting when you two were just children, you will grow up together and have witnessed everything, including the good, the bad and the ugly. You know they will always be there, even miles away. When you are with each other, it doesn't feel like you missed a single minute with each other. This is a friendship that will feel more like sisterhood than a friend.

The “Michael”

This is a friend whom you spend most of your time with, even if it is in your pajamas drinking wine and watching Lifetime movies. You will constantly text each other, always knowing what the other person is going to say. You share every intimate (and I mean intimate) detail that happens to you, and are never ashamed of them. You love each other unconditionally and share in each other's successes, while comforting at your losses. They are always there to make you smile.

The “Taylor”

The "Taylor" in your life may not have been there for quite as much time, but will still be as equally important to you. This friend will make you feel like you have known each other for decades. It won't take long to share your life with them, trusting them with your whole heart and soul. You two will be attached at the hip, even if there is some distance between you. You will always find opportunities to go and spend time with each other because it is some of the best memories you'll ever have. Nothing is a secret from them.

The “Diana”

'Diana' will be a longtime friend whom you have had some distance from, but it will never change the relationship you have. Even if you do not see each other for months, nothing changes and nothing ever will. You love and trust in them, adore spending time with each other and love to shop together in their company. You have equal admiration for things in life and take any opportunity to experience them together. This friend is someone you can come crying to and know they'll listen to every word. You know that this friend is a keeper because of their genuine heart. They'll always understand and never let you down.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
