Dear, Mr. President And Elected Officials, We Need More Than Prayers

Stop letting the innocent lose their lives, and protect us

I am sick and tired of seeing innocent lives being taken from this beautiful world before they are ready to leave. I don’t care what your political orientation is, who you voted for or what you believe in. If you have a heart you should be able to see that there is a problem.

It is not about pointing the finger at whose fault it is, that so many lives have been lost, and so many individuals are forced to grieve, but rather focus on how to stop this madness.

Fox News, Host, Shepard Smith stated on Wednesday, “Since Columbine in 1999, there have been 25 fatal, active school shootings at elementary and high schools in America". This number is devastating.

Mr. President, You have stated time and time again that you will “Make America Great Again”, well, here is your opportunity, Please do something. Where we stand today is far from great, and we need action. I am sure those grieving appreciate your prayers and your kind words, however, those are just words and they will not stop this from happening again, stop their hearts from aching, or give the appropriate consequences to those who inflicted harm on others.

It is too often that we hear of tragedy on the news due to weapons that have gotten into the hands of the wrong people. Our society has become numb to all of the tragedy because it is so common. This isn't right.

Every time it happens, the wounds re-open but never mend. My heart aches for the families who have to grieve the loss of a loved one from a shooting or another act of senseless violence. We need action and we need it now.

I am so proud to be an American, but when I see children, teachers and many other innocent individuals dying, where they are supposed to feel safe, I hang my head in absolute shame. I want to be proud to be from the United States Of America, a country where the people in power should be protecting us all.

One of the survivors, from the most recent shooting in Parkland, Florida, said these words in an interview with CBS News, “To elected officials, I say this, Don’t lie to us, Don’t make any more false promises, because when you do, children die”.

He continued to say, “I support the Second Amendment. But for God's sake, how can we knowingly pass bills and laws that are in direct opposition to saving kids' lives? Sandy Hook … the Pulse nightclub shooting … the Las Vegas shootings, just to name a few”.

Children should not have to live in fear in a place where they spend more time than they do at home. Let kids be kids, by making it harder for weapons to get into the wrong hands and not making young children have to worry about the evils of the world that could harm them. Make background checks necessary for all individuals to have before getting anywhere near a weapon, effective immediately.

Let children go to school without fear. If you are in a position of power, it is because you thought that you could handle it, so please handle it. This is not a game, this is not about politics, or money or power or anything else, this is about human lives.

What else has to happen for all of you in power to realize that this is wrong? It is the people who voted you into the positions where you are today, be grateful and protect them the way they deserve to be protected.

Sincerely,

A concerned U.S. citizen

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
