Why We Need To Appreciate The Boring Days

Sometimes it's nice to do absolutely nothing.

Why We Need To Appreciate The Boring Days
Morgan Shickell

Everyone knows the feeling - it's been months since you've been on vacation, you can't remember the last time you did something wild and crazy; life is pretty dull for you at the moment. After doing your daily social media scrolling a sudden guilt takes over you, seeing all these posts of people in magical places doing awe-inspiring activities. Why am I not doing anything? The seed of envy starts creeping in.

Before you drown yourself in sorrows, first, remember this: Social media is for posting the best moments of our lives. We post the week-long vacations of scuba-diving and backpacking, but not the post-trip laziness of sitting on the couch and stuffing our face full of chips. In life we have highs and lows, intense and boring, happy days and sad. Do not compare your lounge day to someone's day of fun, this only leads to unnecessary sadness. And these thoughts aren't all bad, seeing places you want to go and explore can give you the motivation to prepare for your next adventure. So instead of being upset that you're currently at home while a friend is on a tropical island, embrace that you are in a moment of relaxation and rejuvenation. Then, start planning where you want to be next and when.

Although I love all the travels I've been on and the adventures I've endured, I equally love doing absolutely nothing besides being home and in my comfort zone. Life is about yin and yang, I need my downtime to truly appreciate the exciting chaos of finding new destinations to explore. You need simplicity and comfort to appreciate the excitement and high emotions of a new journey.

The 'boring' parts of my life where I'm just going through day-to-day routines can be where I learn about myself the most. It creates time of solidarity and silence to focus on your thoughts and goals. This is a perfect time to learn more about your inner self and figuring out little activities that make your spirit happy. Reading a book, walking through nature alone, listening to music; all things that seem so simple but can fully rejuvenate your soul.

Think of envy as a seed. The seed of envy is already planted in your mind, but it is up to you on whether you water the seed and let it grow into something bigger. Acknowledge that there is something you desire that you do not have, and then let it pass. Are you going to use it as motivation for your future? Or are you going to allow a negative mindset take over to ruin the rest of your beautiful day? We are all at different stages in our lives, some people are out and about living their dreams, while other are in the 'cocoon' stage, laying low and preparing for their next big thing.

Appreciate the stage you are at in life. It may not be anything noteworthy right now, but if you allow yourself to take time to grow into the person you want to become, you will see well-deserved physical and spiritual rewards.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
