What do John Mayer, three of my best friends, and the members of my immediate family all have in common? They are all fans of NBC's newest tearjerking drama, This Is Us.

Unless you have been living under a rock or have basically fallen off the face of the earth, you have probably heard at least one person you know gush over this TV newcomer. Without giving too much away, the show is centered around the lives of individuals who are all connected and all share the same birthday. Every episode is bound to make the viewer laugh and cry and leaves them eager for the next episode. I definitely ended every episode feeling a plethora of different emotions.

In case you do not watch the show (but you really should, so stop reading this and start binge watching all episodes on the NBC website now), you may be wondering what all of the hype is about. I sure did, and was hesitant to start watching. I simply did not believe that this show was as good as everyone said it was. But trust me, This Is Us exceeded all of my expectations and has become one of my new favorite shows!

Towards the end of December, I decided to give into such "hype" and my mom and I sat down one night and watched the first episode of the show. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, but from that moment on, we were hooked.

I am typically not a fan of TV show pilots, and normally think that do not get me very engaged in the show. It normally takes a few episodes to really get me into a show. But This Is Us is different, as the show was engaging, emotional, and entertaining from the very beginning.

Two days after we watched that first episode, my mom and I sat back down and binge watched the rest of the episodes that had already premiered- totaling to about nine hours of This Is Us watching that day. Throughout the nine hours, we cried, we laugh, and we cried some more. We became engrossed in the story and in the lives of the characters, who are all very relatable and undergo personal struggles that many people do in the real world.

I eventually told three of my best friends about my new favorite show, and got them to start watching too. They too became as obsessed as I was.

This Is Us has the power to bring people together. Though it is a tearjerker, it is also a feel good show. Throughout each episode, you become a part of the big family that is made up of the cast of characters.

The show has received a lot of praise and critical acclaim since its premiere in late September, including three Golden Globe Award nominations, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. All acclaim and praise is very well deserved.

This Is Us was created by Don Fogelman and stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley. You can watch This Is Us on Tuesdays at 9 pm on NBC.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
