Some say it started with Lebron James leaving for Miami back in the summer of 2010. Others feel as though Kevin Durant is to blame after his move to Golden State a few summers back. If you are a fan of basketball, it is no surprise that the last few years has been jaw-dropping when it came to trades and who would be joining which team. Not too long ago, you would see players, especially star players sticking with one team for their entire career. Nowadays, players are doing what is best for them and their immediate future as they seek to join teams who are capable of making it to and winning the NBA finals. Because of this, it has left NBA fans all around the world upset as they claim watching the NBA is useless and boring.
Just a few years ago, the regular season would be fun to watch because so many teams were qualified to make the playoffs. These days, you already know which 2 teams are going to make it to the finals before the season starts. Some people may argue that the NBA finals winner is set for the few years. This is because we are seeing the top players in the league jump ship to other teams in hopes for a ring. As mentioned earlier, Lebron James and KD are at the top of that list. Both guys changed teams throughout their career resulting in championships. Whether you agree with the moves or not, this method produced results for arguably that leagues top 2 players.
After the 2011-2012 season, we began to see a decline in ratings for the NBA regular season. ABC network went from 5.4 million viewers in the year 2012 to 4.7 million in 2013. This drastic decline in ratings raised an eye for many companies and fans around the world. Each year the ratings dropped a little more but nothing drastic. Were the NBA players to blame for people not being interested in watching the regular season games? Nonetheless, ratings were always high for the playoffs, especially the Finals.
We can all agree that the NBA is not what it used to be, especially if you were around to witness the Jordan era. However things change no matter what, for better or for worst, nothing can be the same forever. This new mentality of winning as many rings as you can have definitely caught steam because players are moving without hesitation no matter who dislikes it. With that being said can we truly blame the players? After all, we are still going to watch them play, right? If we call the NBA boring, will that change the ratings during the playoffs? Probably not.
The most recent big-time trade was Lebron James going to the Los Angeles Lakers this summer. Many people were not surprised however you still had people who did not agree. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the league this season, especially for the Lakers since they struggle to make the playoffs as of late. Will the regular season ratings go up this year? Maybe or maybe not but fans around the world will definitely be tuning in to see how players perform on their new teams.
