The Tragic Death of Naya Rivera

Naya Rivera had a successful career as an American actress, singer, and model. She also appeared in many commercials and television shows. She was mainly known for her role as 'Santana Lopez' in the Fox television show Glee (2019-2015).

As a huge Glee fan, hearing the news of Naya Rivera's death caught me off guard. Back when I attended middle school, I remember binge watching this amazing show and feeling connected to every cast member in some type of way. Cory Monteith, also known as Fin Hudson in Glee, passed away in July 17, 2013 from a drug overdose. Not too long ago, Mark Sallin, also known as Puck in Glee, committed suicide on January 30, 2018. Recently, 33-year-old Naya Rivera died from drowning at Lake Piru on July 8, 2020.

There are many conspiracy theories describing the sequence of events of her tragic death; however, authorities confirm that both Rivera and her son were on a pontoon boat on Wednesday. Rivera had left the boat for a swim, but she did not come back. Later on, when the boat did not return, authorities became suspicious and went to search for Rivera- only to find her 4 year-old son Josey Hollis Dorsey sleeping in the boat. After days of searching for Rivera's body, the search team finally located her body six days later.

Rivera was an inspiration for many young people struggling to find their identities. Her character in Glee represented the LGBT+ community back in 2009 when there was a lack of representation and mostly closeted people. Throughout the show, she struggled to find her own identity; however, she was able to explore different aspects of herself through her music. She once said "My passion for music is one of my greatest loves." In the second season, she also came out as a lesbian and began to inspire many others to come out as well. She will always be seen as an inspirational and amazing woman who wasn't ashamed to stay true to her identity.

Rivera's death can be a reminder to many of us. For many, this could mean taking a step back from our busy lives and remembering to stay in touch with our family and close friends. For others, it could mean to take up a risk or a life-changing opportunity. As humans, the idea of death can be open for interpretation but it has its way of reuniting people as it did with Glee's cast members. It is important for us to process the pain and sadness, and take this time to grieve as there is no easy way to confront the idea of death.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
