Stopping To Smell The Roses

Take a moment to realize the world you are in.

Stopping To Smell The Roses

Sometimes in the craziness that is life we forget to look around and enjoy the world. We forget to appreciate the small things. We get caught up in our jobs, in our social lives, or whatever else it is we do as a society. We forget to stop and appreciate the world and its beauty. We need to learn to look up at the sky and take in peace at the vastness of it. Look at the way the blue gives you a sense of calm. The way the sunlight hits and lights up the world. The way the gray makes you want to crawl up with a blanket (and maybe a book) and listen to the patter of the rainfall on an old tin roof when the clouds take over the sky. Look at the moon and the way the light softly touch everything under it. The way the stars twinkle in the night and give you a sense of curiosity and a feeling of wonder.

Maybe if we stop and look more at the world we would be better as a society. Maybe we would be more at peace. If we stop and look more at the way the leaves on a tree dance in the wind. Maybe we would be kinder. If we stop and look at the water and watch how alive it is and how invigorating it makes you feel. Maybe we would come to understand we are not the only ones in this world and appreciate it more. If we stop and watch the birds more and see how they fly. How they are so free and graceful. Maybe we would have hearts that are kinder and less cruel.

Just stop for a moment and feel the wind softly caressing your face or playing in your hair. Feel the light rainfall landing on you as soft as butterfly kisses. Feel the water and how it flows over you in waves or in gentle streams. Feel the grass between your toes or as you lie in the ground to take in the day. Feel the wildflowers play at your ankles in the wind or at your sides or your arms. Feel the sunlight on your face as it warms you. Feel the emotions that spread through us as we are observing. We should feel the peace and amazement at how beautiful nature is and how lucky we are to be able to experience all of it. Just maybe if we all take a moment to experience life we will appreciate it more. Maybe our souls will be lighter.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
