Natural Law Theory is a common theory many put forth as an example for the creation of earth. The thought that God designed a planet with preset instructions almost like a manual, but as seen in many studies and discussions it posses some contradictory facts. Now this isn't a slander at beliefs it merely points out possible issues that arise with the theory.
Natural Law Theory states firstly 1. God designed the world with built in values and purposes. The first of these premises claims that in God’s design of the world right and good are consistent, and that wrong and bad are inconsistent. In this theory morals are set code that are built into life by God. The Natural Law Theory secondly states, 2. Moral natural laws both describe the way things are, and prescribe the way things should be. The right thing to do is seen as natural or normal, while doing the wrong thing is unnatural. Since there is a certain code built into the world it’s more obvious what is right or wrong. The third part of Natural Law Theory support is 3. Laws of reason and rationality. This theory gets rid of Plato’s dilemma of irrationality, and it takes away the problem of having morals separate from God. For those who are looking to prove that God controls morals, Natural Law Theory is the best way to approach it because it has very few flaws or dilemmas.
As with every theory there are some problems, the main problem with Natural Law Theory is the Problem of Evil. If God created the world and all things in it then he also must have created evil. God holds responsibility for the world that he created, but this world includes evil. If God created everything, including Satan, then why? And if God really for some ridiculous reason chose to create Satan, why doesn’t he stop Satan? The second problem is that of the Fact/Value Gap. In a world created by God facts and values are logically distinct from one another. Therefore can we really use facts to show someone values? Since the two are separate we cannot interpret facts to show qualities or thoughts of/about others?
These are just few of the many things we can consider when asking ourselves what we believe, or what we see as the truth. Every theory is flawed and anyone can poke holes in every arguments, but stay true to what you believe.
