Natural hair can sometimes be hard to understand here are 10 things that I had to learn while on my natural hair journey.
1. You don't have to cut all your hair off.
GiphyA common thing that I think many people don't understand is you don't have to do a big chop. If you aren't comfortable with cutting a big amount of your hair off yet, then try to cut off little by little maybe twice a week. This is going to help get rid of any heat damage or bad ends.
2. You have to understand your hair type!
Something important to remember is your unique hair type! If you don't, you could be doing a hair routine that isn't even meant for your hair. If you don't know your exact hair type then refer to the hair chart above.
3. Have patience, young one.
GiphyPatience is key. Just because you decided to go natural with your hair does not mean your hair is going to grow in a day! You have to stay patient and sooner then later you will end up seeing the results you want.
4. Let Youtube be your friend.
GiphySomething that helped me understand my natural hair and my hair type is YouTube. I would constantly look up hair videos for natural hair and so many useful videos would come up that really helped me understand how to style and manage my kind of hair.
5. Protective styles are useful.
GiphyHaving a protective style is really helpful while transitioning into natural hair. That means having hairstyles that protect your ends from being dry. Protective styles can help promote hair grow
Protective styles include braids, buns, a sew in, or a wig.
6. Co-washing is what's going to help your natural hair.
GiphyWhen you wash your natural hair, it is important that you co-wash your hair. For natural hair, shampoo will strip away your hair causing more breakage which is what we don't want.
7. Deep conditioning is important for natural!
GiphyIf you have natural hair, it is especially important that you deep condition. This will help with having soft hair, less frizz, and lots of moisture.
8. Find a good drain stopper!
GiphyAn easy tip for you to help not clog your drains are to find drain stoppers...I don't know if that's the right word but let's just stick with that. They help stop the hair from clogging your drains, which happens very often for naturals.
9. Hair products are so important for you.
GiphyFor naturals, you have to look for products that are going to help your hair! So that means looking for products that enhance and define your curls, that hydrates your hair, helps your hair grow, you have to do research and find what is going to be effective.
10. Oil for your hair is always helpful!
GiphyLastly, when it comes to your natural hair you have to make sure you are oiling your hair, it is important to massage your hair with oils because this is going to help stimulate hair growth. Also, make sure you are applying oil on your ends too to keep them from becoming dry.
Natural hair is a journey, but it is a journey that helps build confidence and hair growth. So give it a try, you may end up liking your natural hair!
