Whether it’s red lipstick or a bright red dress, this color can attract any attention. It’s such a vibrant color that it sticks out to any passerby. Red is suspected to be a symbol or power as well as a representative color of a human heart. Therefore, The American Heart Association chose this color to represent the ongoing fight of women against heart disease.

Many people do not know the significance of wearing red on February 3rd, but this Friday I urge you to wear red. The American Heart Association is asking all of us to join together to wear red and show support for women battling or whom died from any form of heart disease. This coming “Wear Red Day” is the 15-year-marker since the initial year this started. So far, this day has raised awareness and attention to the number one killer of women. For example: Nearly 90% of women have made at least one healthy behavior change, one third of women has talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day, death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years, and many more improvements have occurred. Yet, 1 in 3 women still die from heart disease each year, which is why the Association is hoping to make even more dramatical changes to this awareness. You can help by wearing red and even giving donations to Go Red.

So this Friday, wear red and proudly to show your support for women with confidence. This disease, although affects so many women, needs an action against it. I believe if we join together it can be stopped. Do it for the women in your life, whether she’s a mother, or sister, or aunt show her your appreciation. Don’t forget to Go Red!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
