What happened to being proud to be an American?

For the older generations, this slogan remains true to heart, but with the ability to express political opinions on social media and a lower amount of millennials entering the service, the concept of American pride and nationalism seems lost.

To name a few ways, it is lost amidst political unrest, the cry for equal rights, and capitalism.

With the controversial candidates in the 2016 presidential race, the gender gap, and the money-driven mindset of Americans; many Americans feel hopeless for the future.

But let’s take a step back for a minute and remember that we are the greatest country in the world.

We have freedom. Not just freedom of expression or freedom of the press, but unlimited freedom. We can say “I hate Trump” or “I hate Obama” and that’s perfectly acceptable.

Not to mention that people every hour of every day are protecting us. They dedicate their lives so we can feel safe. How can we forget that the only reason we live is because of the sacrifices of others?

It may seem easy to forget these people when we’re looking towards a potential future with Trump as president. But we are forgetting there is equal opportunity. If you are unsatisfied with the candidates, why don’t you run? Stop complaining that you are hopeless when you can do something about it. If you’re not old enough to run yourself, then join groups to make your voice be heard because trust me, your 400 Facebook friends are probably sick of your constant rants, but continue to fight for what you want.

The mentality of improvement is a major element of this country. In 1920, when women got the right to vote, they didn’t stop there. They continue to fight for equal rights 96 years later. While it may seem unfair that women earn less than men, we have the ability to change our future and earn the rights we deserve due to freedom alone.

While some people work to live, Americans live to work. This mentality creates high stress for some, but it is worth the reward of personal success. The American work ethic is a major reason to be proud of who we are, as we continue to make an impact on the future.

Of course, we are not perfect. But who is? Even the happiest countries on earth have issues, but here, we not only have the ability to make a change, we are the change.

While we definitely have a long way to go for every person to be happy, I believe rediscovering national pride may lead more people to be happy. After all, we are the land of the free and the home of the brave; so let's start acting like it again. It's time to re-appreciate everything people do for us and the freedom we possess.

I am proud to be an American and I hope you are too.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
