For the past two months, I have incorporated avocados into breakfast almost every morning after I read about all the health benefits (not to mention, they're pretty yum). In honor of National Avocado Day (July 31st!), here's an article of appreciation for my latest obsession.
1. It's in my favorite sushi roll.
Each restaurant has their own take on rainbow rolls, but one thing that stays constant is the avocado!
2. Avocado toast (duh)
I don't know when avocado toast really became a brunch staple, but I am so glad it did because after a Saturday girls' night, the perfect avocado toast Sunday morning with a tall glass of orange juice makes me feel like I have my life together. Also, the great thing is that this is really easy to make yourself. I remember one morning at school bringing in a whole avocado to the cafeteria and making my own avocado toast. The two girls sitting next to me were definitely jealous.
3. Cafes
This goes along with #2. I have a particular soft spot for cafes. Every cafe has its own personality and usually its own specialty teas and coffees and pastries, and I just find them such heartwarming spots. I think avocados have brought about new and unique cafes to cities that specialize in avocado dishes or brunch specials. (Side note: avocado toast + new, cute cafe = awesome pictures for Insta)
4. Smoothies
Avocados make great additions to your smoothies. I put a half avocado in almost every smoothie I make just so it's smoother and the health benefits are a plus. When I was abroad in Singapore, there were smoothie places that sold amazing avocado and chocolate or avocado and Nutella smoothies, and I have yet to try and make one myself, but they were extremely refreshing.
5. Health benefits!
I've been hinting at this already, but the avocado craze stemmed from its amazing health benefits. Avocados are loaded with healthy fats that are good for your heart, and this healthy fat can actually help you absorb more nutrients from other vegetables. It also has a lot of vitamins that can improve your overall health, and its high-protein, low-sugar content can help with diets and weight loss.
So, in celebration of National Avocado Day, treat yourself to some quality avocado toast or the extra guac at Chipotle. If anyone tries to call you out for hopping on the avocado bandwagon, you should call them out for not hopping on the bandwagon because avocados are amazing.
"Everything in moderation... except avocado."
