The results of the election sent many shocked faces across the country, while others gleaming with joy.
I rolled over to unlock my phone at around 7:30 a.m. on November 9th. Headlines scattered everywhere saying “Donald Trump is the next President of the United States.” My eyes widened in shock and disbelief that this is real. This is what our country is coming down to.
As a teenager living in southern Alabama, I have seen many smiles and tears of happiness, with very seldom sorrowful faces. This election is one of the most important historic events in the United States today. Instead of abrupt and uncivil remarks towards one another, this nation must come together with courage and unity. The United States is needing each other more than ever during this time because many of us have a fear of what is going to happen next. I am still in utter shock and disbelief that my country voted for a person who believes in white male privilege, and white male privilege only.
This election has taught us that women are still not equal, racism is still strong, and white privilege is still in existence. I am baffled that in this magnificent country we live in, Clinton and Trump were our two best candidates for presidency. This nation needs each other more than ever, and not because of our candidates, but because the tremendous amount of hatred that is being spread when we should be coming together to unite.
During her concession speech, Hillary Clinton was wearing a purple pantsuit, thus sending a powerful message of unity. When red and blue come together, it makes purple. Clinton was stating that this nation must not be filled with Democrats and Republicans opposing one another, but of the United States coming together as one.
