As the presidential election was approaching, all I could think about was how the arguments, accusations, and heated (misinformed) debates, would finally stop. What I wasn't prepared for was the harsh, judgmental, and crass comments made to each other in regards to who they voted for. Never in my life have I seen such hate spewed at one another on the internet, whether it be my peers on Twitter or adults on Facebook. The hatred of one another is everywhere.
I am going to leave my own political opinions out of this entirely, as it is completely irrelevant, but the fact is this: Donald Trump is our next President. It is over, and by going to the internet to proclaim that all of the people who voted for him are racist and ignorant, is ignorant in itself. On the other hand, Hillary lost. There is no need to throw it in the face of her millions of supporters, and call them corrupt liberals.
Honestly, it is downright absurd. I am all for the freedom of speech, and part of the reason that the American political system works, is due to the rights we have that allow us to say what we please. But once the comments and accusations become hateful, that is where I draw the line. There is nothing wrong with healthy debate between two informed and intellectual individuals, but when two people who get all their information off the Huffington Post go at each other on Twitter, it honestly makes me want to gauge my eyes out.
Now this was one of the most hateful and unpopular elections of all time, but why have we let that hate grow on us all? Hating someone is different than disagreeing with someone, and it seems to me that that notion, has been ignored.
I can't even go on social media without seeing personal digs at supporters of both candidates and that alone makes me sick to my stomach. Who you voted for doesn't make you a bad person, what you say and how you act towards others is what makes you a bad person.
In the end: People of all races, age demographics, and genders voted for both Trump and Clinton. Hell, 15,000 people voted for a dead gorilla. But before you tweet, post or say something ignorantly accusing others of being racially insensitive or sexist, think twice.
