"Nasty Women"
Tamara Warren/The Verge

I am not a feminist but I do believe there is a problem with today's society. Feminism, described as a "political, social, and cultural movement that aims at equal rights for women. Its beginnings and extreme controversy in a (Western) patriarchal society has created stigma and stereotypes associated with the definition. Some include that feminists are: lesbians, man haters, 'hairy-legged bitches' " by Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Fem...).

Feminism is a word that so many people believe is "nasty," "stupid," and "ridiculous." Today's society looks at women, these powerful, strong women who are standing up for something they believe in, and they judge them and give them Hell. Although some women use the word "feminity" to be rude to others, or to have an attitude towards everyone, I do not agree with that specific mind set. To make change in the areas that need it, and to change how people view women, being rude is not the way. Still, the fact remains that there is a problem and all they are trying to do is fix it. And I stand with them. I do not personally consider myself a feminist, I consider myself a woman with a view, whether society agrees with it or not.

I am not a feminist, but I believe in equal pay for all

Equality means (for those of you who might have forgetton) "The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities" as stated by the Oxford Dictionary (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/equal...). No one should be left out, no matter the gender, race, or sexuality.

I am not a feminist, but I believe in ending sexual assault leniency

No one, I repeat, NO ONE should get away with sexual assault and the punishment they deserve from doing it this crime. Male, female, adult, children; No one deserves or is asking to be assaulted by someone. Stop letting these criminals get away from the punishment they deserve.

I am not a feminist, but I believe in pro-choice

This is a very controversial issue in today's society. However, society forgets that it is the women's body, not theirs. Nobody else should have the right to control what a female does to her body, even the government.

I am not a feminist, but I believe in public breast feeding

If a women goes through nine months of carrying a life inside of her, goes through hours of painful labor, and then is actually ABLE to nurse her child, who is ANYONE to say that she is not allowed to do it. Women have lives that they must continue after pregnancy and, as a result, must leave their houses, probably with their newborn right behind them. So, if she has a crying newborn with her anywhere outside of her house, she should be able to feed them if they are hungry. It is normal, it is natural, and it is irrevocable.

I am not a feminist, but I believe in equal opportunity

Everyone deserves a fair chance to begin life. It all begins with education. No child should be treated unfairly or unequally because of gender or race.

I am not a feminist, but I believe there are definitely prejudices against us

Not just us, everyone. We are all judged by the color of our skin, what we wear, who we date, and what gender we are. But for what? No two people are the same. Stop prejudice and stop stereotyping.

I am not a feminist,

but I believe in feminism,

I believe in LGBTQ,

I believe in Black Lives Matter,

I believe in fighting for the rights of all.

I believe in standing together as equals.

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows
Photo by Poodar Chu on Unsplash

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. Being in an honors program creates a college experience unlike any other and creates some universal truths that really only an honors student can fully understand.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?
