"The fact is, in plain sight in the public domain, this president is obstructing justice and he's engaged in a cover-up — and that could be an impeachable offense."
This is what Pelosi had to say about Trump's actions after the full details of the Mueller report were finally made public. To be clear, the Speaker of the House stated that the President was obstructing justice, engaged in a conspiracy to cover this up and could be impeached for it. Pretty big deal right? Therefore, some investigation actions would be taken and impeachment proceedings would begin, right?
Apparently not.
Pelosi has done absolutely nothing since the President's appalling behavior was laid bare by the Mueller report. Instead, she is using vague language to keep up appearances and picking fights with the progressive wing of the party: the part of the party actually calling for impeachment. Even Justin Amash, a former Republican who recently left the GOP, thinks Pelosi is making a wrong choice, saying, "From a principled, moral position, she's making a mistake. From a strategic position, she's making a mistake. If she believes, as I do, that there's impeachable conduct in there, then she should say so. She should tell the American people, we're going to move forward with impeachment hearings and potentially articles of impeachment."
Pelosi's lack of action becomes more outrageous when you consider that Mueller has essentially placed the ball in Congress' court. In his May press conference, Mueller said, "And as set forth in the report after that investigation, if we had had confidence that the President clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so... the opinion says that the Constitution requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting President of wrongdoing."
If this isn't a direct call for action, I really don't know what is.
It's time for Congress to start impeachment proceedings. Pelosi's neglect of this deserves further attention, and people need to hold her accountable. Trump's lawless — and recently incredibly racist — behavior is and ought to be absolutely unacceptable. If we could impeach Nixon for being a liar, and Clinton for having consensual sex and lying about it, why can't we impeach a lying racist who has been accused of raping multiple people and has possibly obstructed justice?
That's a question I'd love to see Pelosi answer.
