Number 9

Number 9? I know what you all must be thinking, why would someone write an article about a number, a random number? You're all right 9 is a number, the number between 8 and 10, for some of you your birthdate or lucky number. However, this number is significant to me. It holds meaning and value, and as crazy as it sounds number 9 taught me a valuable lesson.

Unfortunately, life hands us unfair and unjust events that we can't anticipate or prepare for. This past week my community has suffered and continues to grieve the loss of a young, beautiful and intelligent soul. His number was 9. I have never in my life seen a traumatic situation been handled with such grace and bravery. The courage and strength this family possesses has taught me and I hope others such crucial life lessons. I hope that these lessons will aid those in any challenge or difficult time that may arise in their life.

First off forget about the small things. The insignificant things that may bother you for seconds and be forgotten immediately. They don't matter! Put them in the past and carry on with your day. There are so many more important things that no one deserves to get upset and harp over the small ones. Trust me there is so much more to life than a friend who sent a text ending with a period.

Second, be kind and generous. No one deserves to go through life being judged or treated cruelly. Everyone is entitled to dress how they want, talk how they want, preach who they want and at the end of the day we are all human beings. We were all created to be different and those differences should be respected and tolerated. One act of kindness or generosity can go a long way. You never know what someone is going through in their life.

Last and most important enjoy every moment life has to offer! Like I said at times we go through our ups and downs and life is certainly not easy, but try to start and end everyday with a smile. Live, laugh and love! Take a positive approach to a negative situation, as hard as it can be. There is so much opportunity, so much to explore and so much to love in the world. Don't live your life with regrets saying "what if" and just do it. At the end of the day you are in control of your life and can determine the outcome!

I haven't written in quite sometime but this recent tragedy has encouraged and inspired me to share these important life lessons with you all. Live life like number 9! Remember this number as it will have an everlasting impact on me. Be kind, be positive, laugh, smile and enjoy all life has to offer you! Hearts and prayers go out to you sweet boy, but thank you number 9 for the incredible legacy you have left us all with!

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
