Art is subjective. It is diverse. It means something fiercely different for each artist, each viewer and each person involved, at whatever capacity. Most of all, art is moving. At Meow Wolf, the concept of art is brilliantly reimagined. It is wildly creative, it is collective, collaborative, slightly mysterious and completely interactive.
What has been going on inside Meow Wolf’s 33,000 square foot space has remained largely a mystery. Hundreds of artists, interns, volunteers and believers have invested thousands of hours into this hypnotically immersive multimedia installation. Murals are going up, lights are being hung and sculptures finished; everything is starting to look like a dream. Anything and everything you could ever imagine is evolving into "The House Eternal Return."
The soon to be, completely renovated bowling alley, which was bought then rented to the group by "Game of Thrones" author George RR. Martin, has no shortage of talent floating through the LED sparkled air. Mariana Mosca, who is interning with Meow Wolf from Bennington College in Vermont, says she most enjoys “how beautifully Meow Wolf incorporates their philosophy of inclusiveness into their process” going on to say that “they’ve managed to strike a perfectly graceful balance between a professional work environment and a comfortable, welcoming and creative collaboration."
Caity Kennedy, Artistic Director of the new project, "The House of Eternal Return," said she wanted people to know that it is going to be “part playground, part sculpture, but most importantly [it is] a hundred different transportive experiences." Once the exhibit opens to the public on March 18th (get your tickets here: www.meowwolf.com) it will host musical events as well as function as an art exhibit and new age museum. The timing of this could not be better for the city of Santa Fe, which has long established itself as an art hub of the country; but I can promise you, nothing you have seen in this city is even close to what you will see inside this exhibit. Intrigued yet?
The experience each attendee will have is going to be completely different than the person before them. In fact, the experience you have will probably evolve each time you come back to "The House of Eternal Return." You will discover and find things that will take you in different directions and, as you wind and turn through the hallways and tunnels of art, it is possible you will start to unravel the mystery within it all. I cannot give too much away. You need to trust me when I say, this is not something that is easily explainable with words - you’re going to have to see it in person, and I know you won't be sorry that you did.
The installation, which isn’t set to open until the middle of next month, has already announced concerts with internationally famous artists. Early last week, Meow Wolf posted on their Facebook page that CocoRosie (www.cocorosiemusic.com), who headlined big music festivals like Symbiosis Gathering this summer, will be playing at their venue the week of March 23rd and 24th. In under 48 hours, tickets for the two-day event were completely sold out.
If there is anything that you should take away from this article, it is that there will be no shortage of incredible surprises as Meow Wolf opens it’s doors. After working closely with this infamous art collective and the incredible people involved, I can say without a doubt that this is the concept of art completely reimagined. This is the future of the art experience, and it is beautiful.
