There has been mixed reactions to the new one minute and forty eight second video posted by the men's shaving company Gillette, and none of it has to do with the razors.

My Reaction To Gillette's New Ad

The ad was posted by Gillette on YouTube on January 13th, 2019. If you haven't seen the short video, you can watch it here. The ad depicted imagery of younger boys, as well as adults who stood up to toxic masculinity standards and disrespectful behaviors to be "the best a man could be." One specific scene in the short video showed two young boys beating each other up, and the fathers use the phrase "boys will be boys" to justify their aggressive behaviors. There were many instances in the video where disrespectful behavior, especially towards women, was present but was then corrected to be better as a man.

This ad caused a lot of controversy on social media. I saw that on Twitter, men felt they were being attacked, I even saw one response to the video that was saying how hard it was to be a man in the age of the #MeToo movement. These comments were confusing to me because I believed Gillette's ad was made in good taste with a bigger message behind it. People who are upset with this ad don't understand that it was not made to be an attack, but it was encouraging men to think about and be accountable for their actions and behaviors. The #MeToo movement contributes to the effort of holding men responsible for their actions when it comes to sexual assault and sexual violence. It is time that we talk about these issues openly.

Although there were critics of the video, there were a lot of positive comments about the video too. Women and men alike agreed that the ad was encouraging young men to take responsibility for their actions and have respect for women and themselves to be better people. They believed that it wasn't an attack but a reminder to men that respect goes a long way in all aspects of life. I don't think Gillette was talking down to men since they are a men's brand, but I think their message was important in that it was advertising with the purpose of promoting respect. Like the Nike ad, Gillette was hoping to spark controversy in a way that would be beneficial to society. Hopefully, Gillette's call for action will resonate with people all over for us to have a more respectful environment for both men and women.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
