For some reason, a hot question that is always asked in my friend group is "What's your Myer's Briggs personality type?" Of course, it's interesting to find out the personalities behind all of the people that you're close to. So naturally, I took the test as well. The first time I took it, I got an ESFP. I had no idea what it meant, but I liked it anyway. Then I read the description, and it felt like it fit me perfectly. I loved using it to find out more about the inner workings of my brain. I felt like I was uncovering secrets about my personality that I had never known before.
Then, a few weeks later, I took the test and got ENFP. I read that description and that one seemed to fit me perfectly as well. I wasn't sure if my personality had changed or if it was just my mood. I thought that these tests were definitive and weren't supposed to change. I mean, how could I have more than one personality type? Would that mean that I have more than one personality?
This semester, I have found myself exploring the Myer's Briggs types even more to see if (and how) it still changes. In the beginning of the semester, I found myself falling under the category of INFJ. Again, after my result, I found that this personality type was a perfect fit for me as well. Over the past couple of months, I have continued to take and retake the test and find even more types that fit me.
After taking the personality test about five times this semester, I have discovered that four personality types fit me the best. I consistently fit under four categories, per se. Although my first test came out as ESFP, I never saw the "S" again.
Every time I check, I have gotten around 52/48 for introversion/extroversion. It feels like some days I get my energy from the people around me, while others I get my energy from being alone and away from others. I have also noticed that my perceiving and judging seem to change constantly and hover around the 50/50 line as well. Therefore, I guess ENFP, ENFJ, INFP, and INFJ all fit me.
This always made me wonder if the test was wrong. Is there any way to accurately define our personalities with four letters? Or do I actually have four different personality types depending on the week? Or is it, like my friend said, a "glorified horoscope?" Are all of the types written out in a way so that everybody can relate to them?
Besides, why should we be so caught up with who we are as defined by a test, rather than who we actually are? I think personality types are like the sorting hat in the Wizarding world. Yes, the test places you into a type, but really, you're the person who is in charge of your own fate. You are the person who can decide where you belong and fit. You can create your own personality and live that out however you'd like.
