My Work Crew Experience

What I learned during my month serving the Lord.

My Work Crew Experience

As I awake to the sound of eight alarm clocks beeping, I hesitantly roll out of bed and into the bathroom. Here I find at least five other girls fidgeting with their hair and applying makeup. It's 7 a.m. I quickly ready myself for the long day ahead, grab my PB&J (pen, Bible and journal) and head downstairs to meet with the 49 other members of Work Crew. Every morning my boss, Ryan, would read a snippet of scripture and then send the WC members off into beautiful Lake Champion (A Young Life Camp) to do our "quiet time." Here, I would pray for strength and energy, as I knew what stood before me: 10-14 hours of setting, busing, serving, cleaning, and a full day of standing on my feet. That doesn't sound fun or rewarding to many people, but to me and my fellow members of the Work Crew, it was.

I spent a month of my life volunteering at a Christian summer camp. You may be asking yourself, "Why would anyone want to do that?" At first, I thought the same thing. Years ago if you told me I would end up here, I wouldn't have believed you. But after accepting Christ as the driver of my life, I wanted to serve Him as much as possible, and Work Crew seemed one of the best ways to do so!

I got to witness over 350 teenagers commit their life to Christ over the four weeks. I created incredible relationships solely based on the Lord and memories that I will never forget. My relationship with God has immensely grown since I started the month until the current day. I've always heard, "You can ask God for anything and you will receive it." It wasn't until I desperately wanted to stop working to see this saying become a reality.

Anytime I knew that all my strength was gone, I would pray for God to finish what I was doing for me. No, I do not mean Jesus physically appeared and magically bussed all the tables for me. I mean that our Father physically gave me strength and courage to continue what I was doing. Almost instantly after praying, my mood was boosted and my body wasn't sluggish anymore.

Becoming the Lord's hands and feet for a month was so eye-opening. The lessons I've learned are forever in my heart. Although I can't share every situation in which Christ taught me a lesson, I'll definitely be sharing more in the future. Serving the Lord has brought so much happiness and fellowship into my life, and I hope that someday you will experience what I experienced as well.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
