My last 5 days in paradise!

My Week In Kauai
Erica Melendez

I survived another week in paradise! The islands of Maui are one of the most beautiful places I have been, there is almost no comparison. The first five days on Maui were full of fun and excitement with many different excursions planned, while my five days on Kauai were more relaxed.

Saturday: We flew to Kauai and checked into the condo, the condo was huge and the view was gorgeous. We had an awesome view of the ocean, while it was not a beach area it was cool to see the water crashing into the rocks. Saturday night we ate dinner, got settled in, and just relaxed for the night.

Sunday: This was our catch up day! We woke up at around 9:00 am and I went down to the pool and sunbathed (at least I tried to get tan)! Then we ate lunch and I went back to the pool! After that I watched Gilmore Girls on the balcony while listening to the waves crash into the rocks. It is a really soothing sound!

Monday: LUAU DAY! This was the day that we started to explore the Island. We left the condo at around 9:00 am and drove around the island. We got to see the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” which is a beautiful canyon with a really cool waterfall on one end. (Picture below) We stopped at a public beach where the water was quite cold and the sand was super hot, and then we stopped for lunch at The Shrimp Station where I ate beet battered shrimp. It was very tasty! After about five hours of exploring little shops and exploring the island we went back to the condo to get ready for the luau. It started to rain, so we had to have the luau inside but it was still a fantastic show. It was cool to compare and contrast the luau on Maui and the one on Kauai. The outfits were definitely more detailed and the food was different as well, I still did not try the poi though, I wouldn’t wrap my head around it! But overall it was a very good day!

Tuesday: Bri and I woke up at 6:00 am to get to the location for out ATV tour where we got REALLY muddy! We got to see where Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Tropic Thunder, George of the Jungle, Mighty Joe Young, Pirates of the Caribbean, and many other movies were filmed. I even got to swing on the rope swing that Harrison Ford swung on in the opening scene Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark! Once we got home and took a shower, we did some laundry and went exploring again. This time we went to a Kauai Coffee Company and bought some coffee for our fathers and some t-shirts for our brothers! Then we had dinner and went to sleep, for our next adventure!

Wednesday: Horseback riding!! I convinced Briana to go horseback riding on the beach and through the mountains. Our trail guide was even from Fort Worth and we found out that he went to Tarleton State University on a rodeo scholarship! It was cool to finally meet someone on Kauai who knew where Tarleton was. The ride was beautiful, my horses name was Bo Jangles, which made the ride even better! After about 2 hours on horseback, we went exploring a little bit longer to the other side of the island, it only took an hour and a half to go around the whole island! Then we went shopping in the oldest down on the island, and ate some fantastic pizza!! After pizza we went back to the condo to rest up for our busy traveling day.

Thursday: The day we had to go back home L We woke up, packed everything, got in the car, and drove to the airport. Now we are sitting in the airport waiting for our flight to Honolulu. From there we will get on an airplane and head to DFW!

While I am ready to sleep in my own bed, I am going to miss Hawaii. This is a gorgeous state that everyone should have the opportunity to visit at least once. There are so many things to do and to see. I will always be grateful for my chance to see the Island. It will go down in the books as one of the best vacations ever!!!

For now Hawaii, A HUI HOU.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
