To My Very Best Friend: No Matter the Distance, You are Always There

It all started in 6th grade, the years of awkwardness and braces. Little did I know this would be the year I would meet my very best friend. Her name was Kaitlyn and she had these goofy glasses with braces. My neighbor was having a birthday party and she invited me so obviously I went. Kaitlyn had moved to Indiana from Florida, and we instantly clicked and became attached at the hip.

I honestly don't think I would've made it this far in life without her. We have the same name and we are both incredibly weird. The only thing that has changed is that we have matured which was much needed.

Do you know the exact year you met your best friend? It's crazy to think how much of an impact a person can have on your life. Kaitlyn has helped me through the most unimaginable things, and she's had my back when she definitely shouldn't have.

A best friend is that special person in your life no matter how weird you are, no matter the decisions you make, they will always have your back and never judge you. That's what Kaitlyn is to me. She has picked me up when I'm down and she has told me to shut up when I'm being irrational.

I don't know if she really knows how much she has influenced my life, but by the end of this article I think she will.

We were best friends in middle school and every teacher in the school had to know about it. Whether it was causing trouble in class because we wouldn't be quiet, or trying to be the teacher's pet, everyone knew that our friendship was something rare. I mean, we made a music video in class for a science project, and that's dedication.

Let me explain to you what kind of person Kaitlyn is. She is someone who brings a smile to anyone's life by her goofiness or just the positive energy she brings to a room. Oh and don't try to play her in guitar hero because she's a BA. She is kind, passionate, and the ultimate best friend.

Fun fact, Kaitlyn used to be super goofy until she figured out what contacts were. That's when her life changed forever but I never gave up on her! (even if she had glasses that were bent and very circular around her eyes.)

Last year, I went through a whirlwind of events that shaped me as a person and guess who was there to pick up her phone at late hours to listen to me? Kaitlyn. For Christmas she bought me a journal, so that I could write all of my thoughts and ideas down. I couldn't figure out if she was trying to tell me that I was annoying, or if she really wanted me to escape with a journal. I think it was the escape idea, because when she handed it to me with a bow on it, I cried and hugged her thanking her for the generous gift. She even said that she got herself one as well, so that we could make sure to both write all of the time.

Kaitlyn is such a great friend that she pretty much took a bullet (grounding) for me when we were in middle school. I had done something very stupid and she told my parents, it wasn't just me and that she was involved. That is a best friend.

Kaitlyn and I can spend hours sitting in my kitchen at home getting lectures from my mom about boys, girls, love, etc. My mom said from the very first day she met Kaitlyn that “she was different and she was going to be my best friend for life". My mom was definitely right, and sometimes I think she loves Kaitlyn more than me.

Even though Kaitlyn and I don't go to the same school anymore, and we are hundreds of miles away from each other, we can always meet up and talk like we just saw each other the day before.

If you haven't met your best friend, you need to. You need to find your Kaitlyn Hurt in the world because if you don't, you will regret that.

If I get married I know who my maid of honor is going to be, Kaitlyn. Duh! Who else would I choose? She knows me like the back of her hand.

So Kait, bff's for life. Remember?

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
