This past week I got the opportunity to spend the entire week in the 'Big Apple.' NYC is truly a city of dreams. It is filled with artists, musicians, business men and women, fashionistas, and many more. You can feel the excitement in the air, and feel your dreams at your fingertips. Heart beats are pumping, and the people are rushing. New York is most definitely all it is cracked up to be in all of the movies and televisions shows I have ever seen. There are a few things I would like to specifically point out that are far different than the state I call home, Nebraska.
I have lived my whole life in Nebraska, on a farm, outside of a tiny little town in the northeast corner of the state. Nothing out of the norm usually ever happens. Everyone knows everyone, and life is typically simple and decently pleasant. Nebraska is filled with dreamers just the same and hard working men and women whether it be with farming or business. Nebraska is also known for the Huskers, and their welcoming fans. We are a pretty down to earth and charming state. Nebraska does have some beautiful city life and countrysides. It has a super homey feel to it, as well.
Some of the differences traveling to New York City have been pretty overwhelming. When I got to the city my boyfriend had to tell me to make sure I didn't look people in the eye, and keep to myself. This was difficult for me because in Nebraska everyone waves at everyone. If you drive by someone and they wave and you do not wave back it is considered rude. Another big difference is how "on the go" New Yorkers are with everything, even supper. In my home state it would be considered odd not to have a time to sit down and have supper, or take a break to eat. Often times in New York City people just eat while they work, and don't take a lunch break.
Another thing I found interesting is how NYC literally never sleeps. Time Square was still hoping' at midnight, and the streets were filled with people all over the city. In Nebraska the only things still open after 10 p.m. are a few bars, McDonald's, and Walmart. It is just such a significant difference how much things are continuously happening in the big city compared to Nebraska. Also, most people travel by walking in NYC, or by public transportation because cars are not a necessity but more of a nuisance in the city. In Nebraska, we wouldn't make it very far without cars.
NYC gave me a little bit of a culture shock, but it was an awesome experience to get to visit such an amazing city. People dream of living in New York, and now I can see why. There is truly no place like New York City. The shopping is out of this world, the buildings seem to stretch for miles, and the people are kind, although I had heard otherwise. I love my home state, but I would definitely suggest giving New York City a visit or two.
