Writing about huge blockbusters and Oscar award winning films is always exciting and interesting, but I haven't really written enough about one of my favorite genres, comedy. There really is nothing like watching a great comedy, and here is a list of my top 10 favorites of all time.
10. "¡Three Amigos!"
This classic brings together three of the best comedians of their time, Steve Martin, ("The Jerk"), Chevy Chase ("Caddyshack"), and Martin Short ("Inherent Vice"). They play a group of actors who mistake a call for help from a troubled Mexican town as an invitation to perform a live Wild West show and make a quick buck. Instead, they end up in a battle for their lives against real bandits in this smart and hilarious movie.
9. "21 Jump Street"
It was difficult to choose between the first or second, but in the end, I think the first one has the edge. In a time when hundreds of reboots were being made just to cash in on the previous film's name, "21 Jump Street" parodied itself by making fun of this very concept. Jonah Hill ("Superbad") and Channing Tatum ("Magic Mike") are another perfect comedy pair, and watching the two undergo an investigation as undercover high schoolers never gets old.
8. "Superbad"
This film will definitely go down as one of the funniest of our generation. It defines high school awkwardness, and is damn funny while doing so. Also, it's worth noting these were the breakout film rolls for Jonah Hill ("21 Jump Street"), Michael Cera ("Juno"), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse ("Role Models"). Out of all the great comedy films Judd Apatow ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") has put out there, I think this is definitely him at his best.
7. "Step Brothers"
When director Adam McKay ("Anchorman") and Will Ferrel work together, it always seems to be comedy gold, and this film is no exception. Full of laugh out loud lines, and a lip-sync scene that sparked Adam Scott's ("Parks and Recreation") career, "Step Brothers" is and will continue to be great.
6. "Ted"
Seth McFarlane's ("Family Guy") directorial debut introduced the world to the hilariously crass teddy bear, Ted, and I've never thought of my old stuffed animals in the same way. Also, the chemistry that Mark Wahlberg ("The Other Guys") is able to have with a computer-generated bear is both impressive and hysterical.
5. "The South Park Movie"
Matt Stone and Trey Parker ("South Park") took their popular show and made an incredibly entertaining and funny musical. While I'm not often a fan of musical films, the comedy laced within every lyric is just to sharp and hilarious to pass up. The classic "South Park" chaos ensues, but in an even longer and crazier story that is the best TV to film adaption I've ever seen.
4. "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"
Along with "Superbad," this is a comedy that has absolutely has defined our generation. Will Ferrel took over the comedy world when this film hit theaters, and the endless amount of other comedians that fill the cast heighten this film to one of the most quotable comedies of all time.
3. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
There isn't a film I've seen that is able to pack in more jokes and clever lines than this classic from the celebrated Monty Python comedy group. I'll never forget watching this with my dad for the first time. Stupidly funny is the best way I can describe this film, and the whole Monty Python crew brings their A-game in this parody about King Arthur.
2. "This is the End"
From the start of this movie, I knew I was in for something special. Once Seth Rogen ("Neighbors") and Jay Baruchel ("How to Train Your Dragon") walk into a party at James Franco's ("127 Hours") full of celebrities that ends up getting interrupted by a massive sinkhole that ignites the apocalypse, the film is non-stop hilarity from there. Just watching how all the surviving celebrities, who include Jonah Hill ("Moneyball"), Craig Robinson ("The Office"), and Danny McBride ("Tropic Thunder") interact while stuck together in the apocalypse is all I needed to make this one of my favorites of all time.
1. "The Other Guys"
While this may be a lesser known movie among these comedy giants, it is the one comedy that has been able to make me laugh harder than I ever have over and over again. Mark Wahlberg ("Ted") and Will Ferrel ("Step Brothers") make a great pair of incompetent New York City cops as they try to make a name for themselves in the force. From the opening scene, the jokes are continuous and hysterical. It's too bad Wahlberg and Ferrel weren't able to muster up another classic with their newest movie together "Daddy's Home," but I'm still satisfied re-watching "The Other Guys" over and over again.
