1. The "Me Too" Movement Gains Ground
Women's March 2018
The "Me Too" movement took off in the year 2018. This became an important step for survivors of sexual assault in raising awareness for their cause. Women all over the world came forward and shared their stories, in hopes to make themselves and other women around them feel like they were not alone. This movement, along with the Women's March, proved to the entire country that women will not be silenced. With these steps in the right direction, I hope 2019 will bring even more accomplishments for women.
2. Michelle Obama's Book
Michelle Obama
In 2018, former first lady Michelle Obama launched her book called "Becoming." This book gave readers an inside look into her life, her marriage, and her time as a first lady. Her book became extremely popular with readers across the country because of how candid Michelle was with her marriage struggles and look inside life in the White House.
3. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
The youngest woman to serve in Congress.
Instagram: @ocasio20182018 was a big year for the Democrats in gaining control of the House. One huge victory for them was when Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic primary in New York's 14th congressional district. She is the youngest woman to ever be elected into Congress, at age 29. Her election proves to women in the US that it doesn't matter how old you are, if you are persistent in making a change it is possible.
4. Gun Control Marches
Gun Control March in Washington, D.C.
Probably the most important moment for me was the Gun Control Marches that took place across the country. Hundreds of thousands of people marched for stricter gun control laws after the Parkland school shooting. This was one of my favorite moments because it showed me the amount of people who were able to come together in order to call for a change in our system. These marches were mostly student organized, and they showed how my generation is pushing for reform.
5. The Royal Wedding
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
One final groundbreaking moment was the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle. Markle has managed to make headlines with her family drama, as well as her non traditional royal ways. The turning moment in this wedding was the fact that Markle was biracial. Entering the Royal family which is mostly white, she has been vocal and proud of her identity as a biracial woman. I find her voice, confidence, and poise inspiring to young women.
