My Top 5 Favorite Mood-Lifting Movies

Only one is a musical!

My Top 5 Favorite Mood-Lifting Movies

Sometimes when you're down and out, a good movie is called for. In fact, your favorite movie is called for! Here are my top five favorite movies that make me feel happy.

1. "Mona Lisa Smile" (2003)

"A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles" (IMDb). This movie not only stars a bunch of strong actresses, but it showcases strong female roles. I just love this movie to death and watch it whenever I'm in the mood for something a little more serious.

2. "Shall We Dance?" (2004)

"A romantic comedy where a bored, overworked Estate Lawyer, upon first sight of a beautiful instructor, signs up for ballroom dancing lessons" (IMDb). I love Richard Gere in anything, and this is no exception. This movie has it all - romance, drama, comedic elements, and Stanley Tucci (who doesn't love him?). The music is great, the acting is great, the dancing is great. This is one of my family's favorite movies!

3. "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" (1954)

"In 1850 Oregon, when a backwoodsman brings a wife home to his farm, his six brothers decide that they want to get married too" (IMDb). I love this movie so, so, so much! It's a musical, it stars Howard Keel and his enormously powerful vocals, and is just so silly. The songs are goofy, the characters are goofy, the plot is goofy. This never fails to put on a smile on my face and brighten my mood!

4. "The Awful Truth" (1937)

"Unfounded suspicions lead a married couple to begin divorce proceedings, whereupon they start undermining each other's attempts to find new romance" (IMDb). Yes, this is an old movie, but my goodness it is funny! I am a die-hard Cary Grant fan (I even wrote an article about my favorite movies of his) and this is definitely one of his funniest. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a great comedy.

5. "The Birdcage" (1996)

"A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents" (IMDb). I have saved The Best for last. This movie is so outrageously funny! I could watch this movie ten times in a row and never get tired of it. I could quote this movie to you. This is a staple movie in my house and lines from the movie have become inside jokes for my family. I laugh out loud at every joke in this movie every time I watch it. It is simply the best! Nathan Lane is truly the star of the movie! I could go on and on about how fantastic this movie is, really. But not even I (an ultimate fan) could do it justice. If you are looking for something that will leave you giggling for hours afterward, this is the movie for you. Disclaimer: this movie is rated R for good reasons, but don't let that deter you!

I hope you find these movies as uplifting as I do!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
