Well it is finally September and you know what that means... FOOTBALL SEASON! I have waited a whole 50 days since my last article about football where I counted down all the things I am looking forward to this season, but now that we are finally here I am changing it up a bit. In celebration of arguably the best weekend in the sports world I am counting down my all time top five favorite college football memories from my life so far. So here we go... Now keep in mind I am from Austin, Texas home of the Texas Longhorns and go to school at the University of Arkansas, where Hog Calling is no joke. Now we can continue ;)
5. First ever SEC vs. SEC Game
I think they pump something into the air during SEC versus SEC matchups that make them so dang exciting. My first SEC versus SEC game I witnessed live and in person was my Razorbacks versus that SEC team from Texas in Cowboy's Stadium. I was like a extremely giddy kid in a candy store because of the SEC rivalry, the atmosphere of Cowboy's Stadium and it was my first time in the castle that Jerry Jones (Arkansas Alum) built. The game had it's highs and lows and eventually went to overtime. Although my razorbacks didn't win the game, my first SEC versus SEC game was everything I could have hoped it to be and that's why it makes my all time top 5.
4. UT wins Final Duel with the Aggies
I grew up on the University of Texas versus Texas A&M rivalry. Each Thanksgiving night my family would gather around the TV to watch the game or head out to see it in person. The final game before the Aggies thought they would be 'better' in the SEC was in 2011 in Aggieland. There was less than three seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter and the Longhorns were down by 1 point. One of my favorite longhorn kickers Justin Tucker lined up for one final field goal attempt, the kick went up and it was GOOD! The longhorns beat the Aggies one final time in enemy territory and boy was it sweet. Never will forget that play or the image of the longhorn squad rushing the team to embrace their kicker.
3. Quadruple Overtime in Fay
It was early morning battle between the Tigers and the Hogs that lasted well into the afternoon, but for good reason. When Arkansas played Auburn last fall the game went into four dramatic overtimes, with the Razorbacks ultimately reigning supreme. I will never forget this game because kickoff was at 11am and by the end of the final overtime it was already past 3 o'clock, talk about a long game. It is honestly the best football game I have ever attended in person and that is why it fills the number three slot.
2. The Alamo Bowl Trip
December 2010, let me preface this one by saying please don't judge this image I promise I was way more excited than I looked haha. But anyway The Alamo Bowl was the first ever big time post season bowl game I had been to. Bowl games are like nothing else. The host city is filled with seas of people sporting the colors of each respective team, while also poking some friendly jabs at one another too. The team hotels are hubs for all the spirit one can handle including the band and cheerleaders. Since we were in San Antonio the riverwalk became one big Alamo Bowl mecca. So although Arizona didn't come out on top as my family would have loved them to, this expeirence made it in the two slot because I got to stay at the team hotel and meet some of my favorite Arizona players. Including the QB himself and current NFL player, NIck Foles.
1. The VY Corner Touchdown Run
The year 2006. The game the National Championship at the Rose Bowl. The score: USC 36, Texas 33. Time left in the game 33 seconds in the fourth quarter. It was all on the line here. It was fourth and five to go and my family sat anxiously around the TV unable to even watch. With our eyes half closed and hands over faces, we listened nervously to Brent Musberger on ABC with the call. In the blink of an eye about 5 seconds, Vince Young had done it. He squeaked himself in the right corner of the end-zone to win the Longhorns a National Championship. I remember sitting there in awe, not even being able to fathom the football miracle that had just occurred before my eyes. Pretty soon my whole family had processed and were all screaming like crazy people, but then again the whole city of Austin was so what else could you do?
Now I probably could have shared 10 times the amount of college football memories than I just did, but that would take me at least 10 or more articles. There's every longhorn game I ever went to with my dad or my first ever Razorback game or all the Saturday's I woke up early to watch Gameday... the list goes on and on and on...
