I'm crazy about Marvel comics. I love the artwork, I love the characters, and I love talking about my favorite story arcs with likeminded fans. Here are my top 10 favorite Marvel comics--look them up, read them, and then hit me up so we can talk about them!
1. Winter Soldier by Ed Brubaker
I’m pretty much crazy about this comic. I’ve called it the prequel to the Captain America: Civil War movie because it meshes so well with the film chronologically. Every time I read through this run, it just gets better. Bucky Barnes is easily one of my top-three faves in the Marvel Universe, and this comic gives you TONS of information about Bucky’s and Natasha Romanoff’s experiences as Russian spies. There are also some tragic romantic undertones in here that make me crazy.
2. The Amazing Spider-Man by Dan Slott
This was one of the first comics I ever read, and the art quality kinda ruined me for other books: Humberto Ramos’ spreads are cleaner, sharper, and more colorful than any other comic artists’ I’ve seen. Even if Ramos’ art wasn’t fabulous, the storylines are really funny, creative, and engaging, especially whenever the Spider-Verse arcs begin.
3. Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson
This comic would definitely win the award for “Most Woke Comic Book”. Its Pakistani-American heroine, Kamala Khan, is a vivacious addition to Marvel’s line-up of heroes. In my opinion, she is the most dynamic and engaging female character in the Marvel Universe right now. Her relatability also makes Kamala a favorite of mine: It’s refreshing to see a character who is just as huge of a nerd as I am!
4. The Star Wars character runs
Ever since Marvel acquired the rights to begin producing Star Wars comics, they’ve been an incredible body of work. Some of my favourite new developments in the franchise are the individual character runs for Leia, Poe Dameron, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian. Chewbacca’s is especially good, and the art in all of these is just phenomenal.
5. Champions by Mark Waid
This run has been a heckuva lot of fun so far, and it’s only getting started. It features a bunch of the youngest heroes in the Marvel Universe (Viv Vision, the Totally Awesome Hulk, and Ms.Marvel are my favorites) teaming up to create their own little version of the Avengers. It’s a great comic, with more art from my fave Humberto Ramos.
6. Ghost Rider by Felipe Smith
I had little to no interest in Ghost Rider until ABC revealed that their first pod of episodes for the fourth season of the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV show would feature Robbie Reyes as the Ghost Rider. I decided to read up so I’d have a good working knowledge of the Ghost Rider legends before the TC show aired. I really enjoyed the comic because it explored Los Angeles, which is a totally different region than Marvel usually sets their comics in. (Like, 99% of Marvel comics are set in New York City. Seriously.)
7. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Mark Waid
Anyone who knows me remotely well can tell you that I’m an avid fan of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show on ABC. This comic uses the characters to their fullest potential, and explores them in ways that the TV show doesn’t have time for. The art’s great, and I love the episodic feel of each comic.
8. Spider-Man/Deadpool by Joe Kelly
This comic details Marvel’s most unlikely bromance, and what a fun ride it is. Deadpool and Spider-Man are perfect foils for one another; Wade Wilson’s charming antiheroics contrast perfectly with Peter Parker’s sweet moral compass. Overall, it’s a rollicking good time.
9. Totally Awesome Hulk by Greg Pak
This comic gave the Hulk’s anthology a much-needed revamping with a fabulous (and totally awesome) new Hulk, Amadeus Cho. Bruce Banner still drops in from time to time, and I love how this series incorporates otherworldly elements that we’ll probably be seeing in the upcoming “Thor: Ragnarok” movie.
10. Legendary Star-Lord by Sam Humphries
I walked into the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie not knowing a single thing about the Guardians, and I fell in love with them instantly. I’ve read quite a few Guardians-centric comics since then, but “Legendary Star-Lord” is my favourite so far. It’s classic Peter Quill all the way through, and pretty much every time Kitty Pryde shows up things get even more awesome.
And there you have it, folks--my top 10 Marvel comics! Comment your favorites so I can check them out!
