Everyone is in complete awe and adoration for the new live-action Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast. I got the chance to watch this film last weekend and let me tell you, as a fan of the original version... the new one was truly magical.
First, the cast of characters couldn't have been a better fit. I never had a doubt that Emma Watson could be a top notch "Belle". In addition, I noticed the nod of having "Lefou" as a character of a different sexuality other than straight. It was not overdone but was well emphasized throughout the movie. Also, I loved the fact that Belle was not only beautiful and literate, she had a knack for inventing while helping her artistic father. Of course, the costumes were both dazzling and historically accurate. There was an appropriate amount of romance, comedy, action, and tragedy. The audience finally had some insight to Belles background and what happened to her mother. Along with Belle's loss, we learn about the Beast's tragic past which explains her anger issues. Although, this might be a little too dark for younger audiences. Especially when Gaston leaves Maurice for death. Another grey area brought to light is more information on the enchantress and she has a bigger role to the story.
When it comes to the music it was almost as great as the scores from the animated film. I thought "Belle" (the song) could have been a little more put together vocally and tempo wise, but it was still captivating. I did like the original music added to the movie, they were full of emotion. However, I would have also liked to seen songs from the Broadway musical in cooperated into the film. "Be Our Guest" had me feeling like a young child again, eyes glued to the screen. It never fails to impress me. The lights, choreography, and the music was wonderful.
Another aspect I thoroughly indulged in is that not every piece of furniture was once human. It made it a little less odd. Plus, the rose had more of an explanation in the movie. We all know about how the enchantress presented to the Beast and it's meaning, but the live-action movie conveyed how with each lost petal, it took away more mortality of the former residents the castle.
Overall, I would highly recommend the live-action version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. People of all ages won't be disappointed and if you're anything like me, it brings back great waves of nostagia. There's a good balance of classic Disney tale and unique spins. Just remember: it's beauty on the inside that truly matters.
