Disney's The Lion King is set to be remade into a live action movie with CGI animals. It will be directed by the same guy who made the new Jungle Book movie, Jon Favreau. There have been little said about this movie besides the confirmed director, it will be CGI, and there will be music like the original movie from 1994.
Lately, Disney has been remaking their old animated films like Pete's Dragon and Cinderella. Now, other movies have been made like a new Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson as Belle, and Emily Blunt in a new Mary Poppins. More movies are sure to come, but people are unsure what this new Lion King is going to be like.
The original is only a little over 20 years old, and after a watching a video on it, there have been many sequels and even a Broadway show about the movie (which I think is marvelous). This remake is just another continuation of the story.
My only grip with it is that who are going to voice the characters? Are they going to call back Matthew Broderick and James Earl Jones? By remaking the old animated Disney films, you do not have this problem since the actors are most likely passed away or too old to voice the character. If they get a new cast, I feel the cast should be predominately Black since it takes place in Africa. It would also be like be paying homage to the Broadway show in that way. I could totally see some people from Hamilton voice some characters.
I am not too worried about this new adaptation of this classic, but it does feel that Disney is just trying to cash in on their previous properties. I like the fact they are redoing classics like The Sword and the Stone because it makes people more knowledgeable about the Disney classics. I would love to see a well-made remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
If the new Lion King is not great, at least there is always the original.
