As I woke up the morning of Wednesday, November 9, 2016 I reached my cell phone to see who was president. I can't say I was shocked just because they numbers the night before were ridiculously close. I woke up to text messages from my best friend asking what my thoughts were on new President-elect: Donald J. Trump. So many emotions ran through my mind as I thought about what I could be possibly losing out on as I am a hispanic, educated woman. I couldn't wrap my head around what our world would be coming to, as I read about the many protests already happening since he was elected, especially in my hometown of Chicago, IL. I asked my friend what his thoughts were and this is what he responded:
"I refuse to live in a world compromised by hate and stereotypes. I refuse to have my rights taken away because of my color, my sexual orientation, or let alone gender. Millennials will take a stand because we are the future. We may be out numbered now but just wait on it."
I am genuinely upset. How am I, one day, going to explain to my children that I lived in a world full of hate and that people lived in fear everyday for four or more years? How am I going to explain to them that it's NOT okay to be whoever they want to be because someone took that right away from them? How am I going to explain to my daughters that they're right as a woman to vote was taken away because "that's not right"? How do we learn to live in a world like that?
As I scroll down Facebook, a picture popped up and it showed what really won. "Donald Trump didn't win today: Hate Won. Fear Won. Racism Won. Sexism Won. Prejudice Won. Self Interest Won. Let's take a moment to grieve, because America isn't what we thought it was, but then the fight begins, we won't give up."
Don't hate. Just love one another.
